A failed pilot about two actresses who are really struggling.
planktonrules6 June 2020
"CBS Summer Playhouse" played "Mabel and Max", a failed plot that CBS chose not to make into a weekly series. I assume they showed it simply to try to recoup some of the money they spent making it...or, perhaps, they played it to gauge the public's reaction to it because the network still hadn't decided. If you do want to see it, you need to look for it on YouTube. But be forewarned...the picture quality ain't great.

The story is about two women who are roommates and they are both struggling actresses. Mabel (Geraldine Fitzgerald) is an accomplished actress who is well past her prime. She's scared because she's found that for the first time in decades, she has to go on auditions and is afraid of being rejected. Max (Mary B. Ward) is a young lady who is new to the business and she's been going on countless auditions without any luck.

So did I like it? Well, mildly. The characters were pretty good and seeing Fitzgerald as well as Shelley Berman, two veteran performers, was nice. And, the laugh track was not as invasive and bad as you sometimes find on failed pilots. I might have watched it had they approved it.
