A darker subject matter and the new appearance of the film which distances the viewer from the show is a disappointment. The obvious changing of the dog doesn't help either. The show is feeling tired now. No wonder viewing figures fell and the show was axed after this series. A good cast and a fair script. Such a shame that ITV chose to change the appearance of the presentation. The art department was probably pissing itself with excitement while the viewing public just got pissed off with if all.

8mm

Warning: Spoilers
Dangerous Liaisons is a very somber episode of The Last Detective, which sadly didn't go longer than four seasons. Why, oh why, did this fine UK police drama not continue beyond four seasons?

This episode is reminiscent of 8mm, the haunting snuff movie from 1999, the one with Nicolas Cage playing a private detective tracking down a snuff movie. In Dangerous Liaisons, a snuff film turns up in the home of Dominic Sylvester (played by Jeff Rawle, who totally shed his nerdy George Dent persona from Drop the Dead Donkey), who was found murdered in his house.

The poor victim in the snuff film was a Polish immigrant, and quite sad her life ended this tragic and unthinkable way.

Dangerous Liaisons was screened almost a decade before Brexit.

All the police team are quite shaken by the snuff video, and the final scene with Dangerous and Julie was quite moving. I'm pleased they are back together.

Warning: Spoilers
Like other police or detective shows. The Last Detective have done a story about old school friends with a dark secret. The rock star/group with a dirty past.

Now it is the one about the snuff video.

The police find the remains of Dominic Sylvester who has been lying dead for some time. They discover that he was a hermit like old man who was murdered.

Dangerous Davies discovers a 8mm film reel that appears to show a young woman being murdered.

Sylvester had an interest in taking photos and porngraphy. It leads Davies to the local porn underworld and to find out if the death on the screen was real.

Davies finds a lead when learns that the dead woman spoke Polish. Maybe the death of Sylvester was revenge.

Not an original idea but there is certainly a seedy atmosphere. There were some realistic nods to how people arrived from Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 80s for a better life but their families back home would lost contact.

Phoning abroad was almost impossible and letters would be monitored when the communist regimes frowned on people leaving.

It does have some clunky writing and I never really understood why Sylvester chose to murder his son's nanny.

Sickening

Much, much darker than any of the previous episodes. Disturbing. Unrelenting. Not the same TV show. I

Sickening.

After my first viewing it was nearly 20 years before I watched The Last Detective again.
