Umbrellas

I think this film is beautifully shot. Its best quality, in my opinion, is its simplicity. The idea of taking simple words and phrases interjected throughout the piece, instead of using actual spoken dialogue, was one of my favorite techniques. Films nowadays often tend to be too stuck on language and slang, oftentimes used as a device that overshadows the acting itself.

The setting is a fantastic role in and of itself. I particularly enjoy when the director chooses to use setting as its own entity. The actors are well-cast; each understand how important their own expressions and gestures are to the piece and are never faulty in over-acting in place of spoken word.

And finally, I must say a congratulations to this fantastic director/producer team. They are sure to be up-and-comers; I'll stay tuned for more of their wonderful work!

Man seeking to escape feelings of being trapped in marriage

Warning: Spoilers
Full of wit and metaphor, this short film captures a clear look at the breakdown of a marriage, from the first glimmerings of freedom to the plans of escape and finally the agony of leaving children behind.

The photography is excellent. Watch for the signage and look for the symbols representing the emotional journey of the main character. Some are easier to work out than others, and I worried that I may have missed one or two.

Beautifully shot and imaginatively choreographed, this film shows promise of great things to come. Director Richard Martin is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future.
