Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons: Part 3 (shown on screen as 'Episode Three' during the opening credits) starts as the Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) & some UNIT men manage to rescue the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) & Jo (Katy Manning) from the Auton policemen. With Professor Phillips (George Sturgess) dead & no leads The Doctor & the Brigadier are stumped, then a man from the ministries named Brownrose (Dermot Tuohy) informs the Brigadier about a sudden spate of unexplained deaths in the home counties starting with plastics factory manager McDermott & it's owner Mr. Ferral which is the lead the Doctor has been waiting for. He is too late though & the Master has abandoned the plastics factory & has already set his deadly plan into action...
Episode 3 from season 8 this Doctor Who adventure originally aired here in the UK during January 1971, produced & directed by Barry Letts this has been a good story so far. The script by Robert Holmes has moved along at a decent enough pace although the cliffhanger episode endings seem forced & very rushed like they added at the last minute purely because that's how Doctor Who episodes should end. The character's have been fine although the Brigadier hasn't had much to do over the first three episodes, the dialogue has served it's purpose well enough & there have been some creepy moments as well as a neat little shoot out between some UNIT soldiers & Autons at the start. A good story that's entertained so far.
The opening of this episode features a nice action scene between some UNIT soldiers & Autons, I can't imagine a similar sequence being allowed these days as people fire guns, get shot & a soldier purposely drives a car into an Auton to send it crashing over a cliff! I can just hear the accusations of it being too violent in the British press! This episode also features the Autons giving out Daffodils dressed in yellow suits & wearing huge over-sized caricature plastic heads which look pretty creepy on their own. The location filming is quite nice & to an extent off sets the terrible CSO which is just very distracting. The Doctor also performs an autopsy on the evil plastic doll in the style of Quincy (1976 - 1983) as it's shown entirely via face reactions!
Terror of the Autons: Part 3 is a great episode in a great story, a must for fans & I'm many would enjoy it's mix of sci-fi & horror from a time when Doctor Who actually tried to be scary.
