Don Cheadle is the latest addition to the stacked cast for the upcoming Peacock limited true crime series “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist.”
Cheadle joins previously announced series lead Kevin Hart in the show, along with fellow cast members Taraji P. Henson, Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Howard, and Dexter Darden.
The series is based on the podcast “Fight Night,” which was produced by Will Packer along with iHeartPodcasts and Doghouse Pictures. It will be set in Atlanta in 1970. The official description states that it will tell “the infamous story of how an armed robbery during the night of Muhammad Ali’s (Darden) historic 1970 comeback fight changed not only one man’s life, but an entire city’s destiny.”
Cheadle will appear in the series regular role of Jd Hudson, described as “one of Atlanta’s first Black detectives assigned to Ali’s security detail and the robbery.”

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

Exclusive: Lauren Staerck (Trust) and Natasha Henstridge (Species) are underway in England on Cinderella’s Revenge, a film that Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers) is directing for Mark Amin’s Sobini Films, that will give the classic fairy tale a horror twist.
In the film, Cinderella (Staerck)’s wicked stepsisters and stepmother push her too far, leading her to swap her glass slippers in pursuit of blood-soaked vengeance with the help of her Fairy Godmother (Henstridge).
Also starring Stephanie Lodge, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis and Darrell Griggs, Cinderella’s Revenge is produced by Sobini Films’ Amin, as well as Mark Lester, Cami Winikoff and Jessica Mathis.
“Cinderella is the most famous fairy tale in the world,” observes Amin. “We were able to develop a great horror script that is also a female empowerment story with global appeal.”

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

The fourth and final season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” arrives on Prime Video on June 30. It finds Ryan — now the new acting CIA director — unearthing internal corruption and suspicious black ops that leaves the United States vulnerable to attack. John Krasinski stars as the tough-as-nails Ryan.
Watch the “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” trailer:
“Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” is a new docuseries that reveals the truth behind the myth of the wholesome religious family and their involvement with the predatory Bill Gothard and The Institute in Basic Life Principles. The organization’s abusive practices — and the insidious long political game it plays — is revealed on June 2. The Duggars and their 19 “happy” kids are exposed as frauds, while also being manipulated by Gothard and enduring the scandal of Josh, their sexually abusive son.

In just three months, Jonathan Majors has garnered widespread praise for his Sundance premiere “Magazine Dreams” and pulled off a rare box office feat, but his career’s ascent shows no signs of peaking any time soon. Only days after “Creed III” posted a $58 million opening weekend, a record for both the “Rocky” franchise and sports movies at large, and earned Majors the distinction of starring in consecutive top earners –“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” won the weekends leading up to “Creed’s” March 3 release – news broke that the in-demand actor is signing up for not one, but two high-profile projects: “Da Understudy,” a story of backstage obsession and jealousy on Broadway that’s eyeing Spike Lee to direct, and “48 Hours in Vegas,” a dramatization of Dennis Rodman’s sojourn in Sin City during the 1998 Bulls season.

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? Onyx Collective has given a series greenlight to Reasonable Doubt to stream on Hulu. Emayatzy Corinealdi (Middle of Nowhere) is set to star in the lead role of the legal drama, from writer/executive producer Raamla Mohamed (Scandal); executive producer Kerry Washington, who will direct the first episode; and ABC Signature.
This marks the first scripted series order for Onyx Collective, Disney’s new curated content brand for creators of color and underrepresented voices, led by Tara Duncan, whose output is tailored primarily for Hulu.

Onyx Collective on Hulu has greenlit the legal drama “Reasonable Doubt” starring Emayatzy Corinealdi in their first scripted series order, Variety has learned.
The series was originally reported as being in development at Onyx Collective back in July after having previously been in the works at ABC.
“Reasonable Doubt” will be executive produced by Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone for Simpson Street and Larry Wilmore via Wilmore Films. Raamla Mohamed is writing and executive producing the series, which features an all-Black writing staff. Attorney Shawn Holley is a co-executive producer as is Jon Leshay. ABC Signature will produce. Simpson Street and Mohamed are currently under overall deals with the studio. Washington will also direct the first episode after previously directing episodes of “Scandal,” “Smilf,” and “Insecure.”
“It’s hard to imagine a more ideal creative partnership for our first Onyx Collective scripted series,” said Tara Duncan, president of Freeform and Onyx Collective.

Jon M. Chu’s long-awaited film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” should have debuted to critical acclaim. From the dynamic musical numbers to the film’s stars, which include “Hamilton” standout Anthony Ramos, “Orange Is The New Black” star Dasha Polanco, and “Straight Outta Compton” breakout Corey Hawkins, all the signs pointed to another progressive hit on par with Chu’s “Crazy Rich Asians.”

It would be reminiscent of Lady Gaga‘s 2019 Grammy victories, which preceded her ultimate Oscar coronation for “A Star is Born.” However, “Rocketman” and “A Star is Born” are now rivals in the race for Best Visual Media Compilation, so Egerton will have to beat Gaga before following in her footsteps.
Lady Gaga’s starring role as an up-and-coming musician in “A Star is Born” brought her her first major recognition for her acting on the big screen, and she also co-wrote the soundtrack, including the centerpiece ballad “Shallow,” her duet with Bradley Cooper that won her Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Visual Media Song.

Slowly but surely, Oscar has been filling in the blanks of its ballot categories that have never resulted in a black winner. Just last year, Jordan Peele became the first African-American to take the original screenplay prize for his socially aware horror film, “Get Out.” This year, he became the first black producer to compete twice for a Best Picture Academy Award, the second being for Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman.”
The legendary Lee, who is just the sixth black helmer to compete on Hollywood’s biggest night, could change the record books himself if he achieves what John Singleton, Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen, Barry Jenkins and Peele didn’t do – win Best Director.
But there are plenty more categories below the line as well as above where history can be made.

Showtime has given a 10-episode series order to Black Monday (fka Ball Street), its half-hour Wall Street comedy pilot starring Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall, for premiere in 2019. The series hails from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, Black List writer Jordan Cahan (My Best Friend’s Girl), Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (Preacher) and Sony Pictures TV Studios.
Written by Caspe and Cahan, Black Monday takes us back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday, the worst stock market crash in Wall Street history. To this day, no one knows who caused it — until now. It’s the story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine, Don Henley’s birthday party and the glass ceiling.
“Black Monday is a scathing comic commentary on the excess of the ’80s,” said Showtime president David Nevins said.

“Atlanta” was one of the biggest Emmy breakthroughs of 2017, earning six nominations including Best Comedy Series and winning Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing (both for series creator Donald Glover). But those noms didn’t include the show’s supporting actors Zazie Beetz, Brian Tyree Henry and Lakeith Stanfield. Can they break through in season two? It’s common for a popular show to expand its nominations after its initial breakthrough, like “The Office,” “30 Rock” and “Veep.”
After an abbreviated six-episode first season in 2005 “The Office” broke through at the Emmys in 2006 for its second season, which won Best Comedy Series. Then supporting actors Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer made the cut for the first time in 2007 for season three.
“30 Rock” was an instant hit at the Emmys, winning Best Comedy Series in 2007 for its first season and again in 2008 for its second season. Then the show’s supporting actors Jack McBrayer,...

“Black Panther” has received abundant praise, including for its wide-ranging, multi-dimensional female characters who get to drive the story and don’t just exist to motivate male characters. I echo all those sentiments about warrior Okoye (Danai Gurira), spy Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), scientist Shuri (Letitia Wright) and queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett). But I was just as excited as the end credits rolled to see that Marvel and director Ryan Coogler put their money where their mouth is by hiring women in prominent roles behind the scenes, and I don’t think it’s too early to highlight their accomplishments as worthy awards contenders for 2018.
The film is distinguished by its excellent cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, and editing, and while it’s still too early to anticipate how this film will compare to the rest of 2018’s films I can safely say “Black Panther” would be...

Fall is the season of Real-People movies — the biopics that often fuel Oscar hopes. Recent weeks brought “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Stronger,” and “Victoria & Abdul” and there’s more than a dozen to come, including “Marshall,” “The Post,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Current War.” There’s good reason to believe that a biopic might produce awards. In the last five years, 28 of the 100 Oscar acting nominees played real-life characters, as did four of the 20 winners. But when it comes to the box office, the odds aren’t as kind.

According to a lecture given early in “Creepy,” serial killers are broken down into three categories: organized, disorganized, and mixed characteristic. The first two are relatively easy to define, and thus simpler to track down. Mixed-characteristic killers, meanwhile, exhibit no discernible patterns. They’re puzzles, anomalies. You can probably guess which class of killer this detective story from Kiyoshi Kurosawa follows.
The director, whose genre mastery is most evident in the likes of “Pulse” and “Cure,” more recently delved into this territory in “Daguerreotype.” That old-fashioned haunt took him outside Japan with the help of Tahar Rahim, Olivier Gourmet, and Mathieu Amalric; “Creepy” is both a return home and a return to form. Here he’s woven a procedural yarn from a novel by Yutaka Maekawa that was either loosely adapted or strikingly aligned with the director’s long-established sensibilities.

Last week, rumors were swirling around that the last piece of the major New York Film Festival gala puzzle had been filled, namely that Woody Allen’s new project Wonder Wheel was going to be the Closing Night selection. Well, a few days later, that was confirmed, so the big three titles at Nyff are now set. Allen’s Wonder Wheel joins Opening Night selection Last Flag Flying from Richard Linklater and Centerpiece selection Wonderstruck from Todd Haynes to lead the way. We’ll have a full Nyff slate soon enough, but for the moment, the focus will be on Allen, his film, its Oscar possibilities, and the Closing Night selection historically. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in terms of this particular festival, getting to be the closer is traditionally a pretty big deal for a flick. Nyff just seems to usually end on a bang.

Two specialized releases made the top 10 this week: “Gifted” (Fox Searchlight) came in #8 with $4.5 million, while the second weekend of “The Lost City of Z” (Bleecker Street) managed to place 10th in only 614 theaters.
Specialty distributors are pushing their films to more theaters; at nearly 2,000 theaters in its third week, “Gifted” is a wide release. This strategy doesn’t always work: A24 went to over 1,000 theaters initially for “Free Fire” with Brie Larson. It flopped across the board despite its pedigree.
Documentaries continue to stand out among niche limited openers. “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City” (IFC) scored a strong New York two-theater response despite its parallel VOD option. And food scored again as “Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent” (The Orchard) worked with targeted marketing in its first two cities.

Details are still very sparse, but, according to Michael K. Williams, he’s going to be playing Miles Davis in the very near future. Asked in an interview about his stated desire to play the jazz great, Williams confirmed that a project is indeed “happening.” He added that it will “probably be going into production hopefully the first quarter of 2018.” Based on the brief discussion, it’s unclear what form this will take or who else will be involved. But it’s certainly a tantalizing nugget of information. Williams, meanwhile, is currently filming a mysterious role in the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.

Upcoming biopic looks to put Jeremiah G. Hamilton back on the map.Cheadle as Miles Davis in ‘Miles Ahead’ (2015)
There are really two sorts of biopics out there: those that lure us in with names that we are to some degree already familiar with — Snowden, Jackie, Lincoln, etc. — and those that (re)introduce us to figures and stories that have, for one reason or another, flown under the radar or largely faded from public consciousness, like last year’s Hidden Figures.
Movies shape our general view of the past in a big way, especially in dealing with anything that happened before photography and film really exploded in the 20th century. When it comes to portrayals of the pre-2oth century Black history, particularly in the U.S., the first word that would most likely come to mind is slavery. Films such as 12 Years a Slave are incredibly important for attempting to realistically portray the horrors of slavery...
