Awesome intro

Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic first episode. Characters feel real, intriguing mystery behind the angels, the conflict between the group we see and the group sending the Angel is interesting, the visuals are eyegasmic with the colors popping and the beautifully drawn backgrounds. The action was also well done so far especially for its time.

With AoT being my favorite anime of all time, it's unreal how much it seems like this show inspired it. Titans/angels attacking a heavily guarded area, protagonist is able to use a Titan/evangelion to fight back. These mech/angels are also biological based mechs which seem basically alive which is also very similar to Titans and Titan shifters. Also the Angel attacking is very similarly shaped to the Beast Titan. Speaking of the Beast, Shinji and his dad seem to have a very similar relationship to Zeke and Grisha. Also Shinji similar to Eren because many people are hoping and expecting him to master their giant body quickly. There was also a spinal injection for the Eva, obviously similar to the spinal fluid usage in AoT. This has me even more excited to watch this show because I love AoT and it's very clear this show was doing some very similar things.

The atmosphere is drenching this show. Feels very cinematic. The sound design is great and the design of Shinji's Eva is unbelievably cool.

a fun intro to the series
framptonhollis29 September 2017
I knew almost nothing about this series going into it. I had a mild idea of what the plot was, had heard the theme song before, and was aware of it being a highly praised, if somewhat divisive, anime. I don't know much about anime, but recently I've grown a slight interest in it and decided that I mine as well check out this classic. My first impression is overall quite positive as I had a lot of fun watching this quick, action packed episode. I've heard this show being described as a psychodrama, but I've also heard that it doesn't really delve into such realms for a few episodes, so as of right now it comes across as a more standard, but still very likable and hugely entertaining action/sci-fi series that is excellently animated, sometimes creative, and often surprisingly funny. I'm pretty impressed and cannot way to explore this world and these characters further.

Big Robots and Little Boy

It's an okay start to the series. I would be interested to see more but I wouldn't say I'm overly hooked yet.

There are intriguing questions such as:
  • the nature of these invading Angels
  • why the boy is suitable to pilot the synthetic (And doesn't need an interface?)
  • why the synthetic has shown a desire to protect the boy

I guess there is a possibility interesting answers could come for these questions.

But at the end of the day - as it stands, episode 1 does not come across as particularly original or inventive. It's a big monster and a big robot.

It was very interesting to see the main character, Shinji Ikari wants to run away in front of the Evangelion. It was rather realistic character to see.

Better on rewatch

Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched this show it started off bad for me but I remember enjoying the entire second half however I also remember disliking the first half.

This episode exceeded my expectations a second viewing made appreciate the beginning of the show. All the scenes with the angel are thrilling to watch, it's design was menacing, the animation of the whole episode was impressive considering it came out in 1995.

Another great aspect was the music it was always effective at amplifying each scene and made the action sequences even better.

Shingi and Misato are the main focus of the episode on my first viewing I found Shingi annoying but I adored Misato this time around I'm more open minded so I'll see if I appreciate Shingi's character more.

All in all its a much better opener than I remember even though the cliffhanger was criminal 8/10.

A Ripoff Of The First Episode Of Mobile Suit Gundam
EuropeanQoheleth23 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
*There's a teenage boy with a Japanese name whose father works for the military. *The father has been working on a powerful robot. *The Earth forces are under attack by an enemy that they've never faced before and they're getting their butts kicked. *Said teenage boy is picked up by a female in a car and arrives at the battle. *Civilians are in danger and the only one who can save the day is the son of the military man who takes control of the powerful robot. *The civilian boy emerges victorious even though he has no experience of piloting a robot or even being part of a combat situation of any kind. One or two similarities is excusable but when there's this many it's just ridiculous and the only explanation seems to be that it's a ripoff.

They were right about 2015 being a disaster though!
