The highly anticipated “Sonic the Hedgehog” TV series spinoff, “Knuckles,” is here and it includes a smashingly great cast that’s ready to hit you with your favorite Sega characters.
The six-episode live-action series made its premiere on Friday, April 26. According to Paramount+, the series “follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.” The show takes place between the films “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and was made by many of the same people involved in the films.
The series was created for television by John Whittington and Toby Ascher, who also serve as showrunners during production.
Here’s a complete “Knuckles” cast and character guide. All six episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.

Actor Idris Elba and media mogul Tyler Perry once collaborated for the feature Daddy’s Little Girls. But Elba’s time on set didn’t seem to change the actor’s mind on some of Perry’s work.
Idris Elba once criticized Tyler Perry’s ‘buffoonish’ characters Idris Elba | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Elba was already very familiar with Perry’s work. In 2007, he co-starred alongside Gabrielle Union in the Perry picture Daddy’s Little Girls. There, he played a blue-collar worker trying to make ends meet for his family. Union was already on board the project before Elba was cast. Both Perry and Union agreed emphatically that he was the right actor for the movie.
“We screen-tested a few men, and the only man on both our lists – I made a list and Tyler made a list – the only man on both our lists was Idris. It was a no-brainer,” Union once told MovieWeb.

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Studios that utilized theaters to boost PVOD prospects saw their efforts pay off this week. The 19.99 “Plane” (Lionsgate) and “M3GAN” (Universal) lead the VOD charts, followed by Christmas titles “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/24.99) and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Sony/19.99). With studios recouping 14 or more from each transaction, that’s a bonanza — especially with three of those films still in the box office top 10. Synergy at last!
“Plane” is #1 on iTunes and Vudu, #2 on Google Play, with the order reversed for “M3GAN.” “Puss” is #3 on Google Play, fourth on the others. “Whitney,” new this week, is #3 on Vudu and #7 on iTunes. It has yet to chart at Google Play (which often lags), but perhaps it isn’t helped by the site listing it as a “documentary.” “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/6.99) took the #3 spot at iTunes.
“Legion of Super-Heroes” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99), the news DC Comics direct-to-video animated feature,...

February is for lovers. But with its list of new releases for February 2023, Netflix is unveiling another season of arguably its least romantic show.

Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.
Earlier today, the streaming service announced their entire line-up of new titles for next month and it’s a meaty list, comprising both films and television shows. And though The Boys may be the highlight for many...

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.
For those of us who want to relax with some ‘member berries,...

This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

Black filmmakers, creators and actors have, for years, worked to portray the gamut of black fatherhood on screen and dispel societal prejudices of the no good, or absentee black father. Here’s a list of just some of the best representations of black fatherhood and father figures on the big screen.
Furious Styles (“Boyz n the Hood”) Laurence Fishburne held nothing back, and dropped some serious knowledge as Furious Styles, the father of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Tre in “Boyz n the Hood.” Whether it was preaching about gentrification and the plight of the crack epidemic or talking Tre down from making seeking revenge with a gun, Furious did whatever necessary to ensure his son became a man growing up in the Crenshaw ghetto of Los Angeles.
Mr. Jones (“Friday”) The late, great John Witherspoon was known mostly for his exaggerated hilarity — plenty of which unfolds in “Friday” — but as Mr.

Isan Elba has been named the 2019 Golden Globe Ambassador. The daughter of British actor Idris Elba (aka the Sexiest Man Alive) and his first wife Hanne Kim Nørgaard, Isan has been spotted a number of times accompanying her famous dad to red carpet events over the years. They made their first sweet appearance over a decade ago, when a young Isan accompanied her dad to the premiere of Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls. Since then, they've showed off their broom-riding skills at a Harry Potter event, hit the town with Idris's fiancée Sabrina Dhowre, and even had a gorgeous father-daughter date at the Oscars.
In her new role role, the 16-year-old will align herself with a nonprofit organization of her choosing and work to raise awareness, and she will also help to hand out the trophies at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. The ambassador role was created by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association...

I've been waiting and debating for oh-so-long for a comedy show that is actually funny; and when I say funny I mean leg-slapping, foot-stomping, my-head-is-hurting funny! Well, to my surprise, ABC has delivered a new side-splitting comedy called "Black-ish," about a successful, black family man who struggles to find some cultural identity while raising his family in a predominately white, upper-middle class neighborhood. It stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and newcomers Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, and others. Here are six reasons why you should watch:
1. Anthony Anderson Is Executive Producer
Anthony Anderson was born in Compton and is the current host of Food Network's "Eating America," and formerly a member of NBC's Emmy Award-winning drama "Law & Order." Anderson played Detective Kevin Bernard opposite Jeremy Sisto's Detective Cyrus Lupo. He's also appeared in more than 20 films, including the comedy blockbuster "Barbershop." Now, he's starring in and executive producing "Black-ish,...

Video game adaptation Need for Speed wasn't fast enough to take the checkered flag this weekend. Instead, first place went to DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody & Sherman. In its second weekend, Mr. Peabody fell 32 percent to $21.8 million. That's a better hold than last March's The Croods (39 percent), and also a slight improvement over How to Train Your Dragon (34 percent). To date, Mr. Peabody has earned $63.8 million; with good word-of-mouth and a lack of competition, it should reach $100 million by the end of the month.300: Rise of an Empire plummeted 57 percent to $19.2 million. In comparison, the first 300 dropped 54 percent in its second outing. So far, the sequel has banked $78.4 million at the domestic box office.Playing at 3,118 locations, Need for Speed opened in third place with $17.8 million. That's a somewhat disappointing start: it's lower than the worst Fast & Furious movie (Tokyo Drift, $24 million), and is roughly on par with past...

Atlanta -- Even though Gabrielle Union lost the lead role of ABC series "Scandal" to Kerry Washington, she says the experience gave her hope that strong and likable female characters can be created for black actresses.
"I said to myself, `Oh my God, these roles are out there,'" Union recalled in a recent interview. "It showed me that you don't have to settle. Luckily, the success of her and the show bred more work. Just from the audition process, I knew that I couldn't go backward."
Now, Union is ready to move forward and make her mark. She will star in the dramatic movie "Being Mary Jane," which premieres Tuesday night on Bet. The movie will become a series, expected to air in January.

Thanks to a vibrant marketing effort and a complete lack of competition for female audiences, The Great Gatsby opened to an excellent $50.1 million over Mother's Day weekend. However, that wasn't enough to claim first place from Iron Man 3, which followed up its record-breaking debut with another very strong outing. Even with this impressive one-two punch, overall box office was still down a bit from the same weekend last year when The Avengers scored a second weekend record with over $103 million. Iron Man 3 fell 58 percent to $72.5 million, which is the fourth-highest second weekend ever behind The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight. The decline is much steeper than that of The Avengers (50 percent), but is about even with Iron Man 2 (59 percent). To date, Iron Man 3 has earned an excellent $284.95 million, and if it continues to follow Iron Man 2's pace it will ultimately wind up over $400 million.

On paper, "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" should have done decent business this weekend. Even though he didn't write or direct it, the meet-the-parents comedy had Perry's name on it as producer and promoter. It features two popular TV stars, Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington, in the leads. It's a movie that caters to older women and comedy fans at a time of year (summer superhero season) when both are underserved. It opened on Mother's Day weekend, a good time to catch the family business that Perry targets so effectively. Most of all, as a movie with an all-African-American cast, it seemed like smart counterprogramming to "The Great Gatsby," a movie about white people throwing parties. Perry movies typically open at around $20 million. Pundits predicted "Peeples" would earn at least half that. Instead, it debuted in fourth place, with a meager $4.9 million in estimated sales. It's Perry's weakest opening ever (eclipsing "Daddy's Little Girls,...

Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson star in the upcoming film "Peeples," a new comedy from producer Tyler Perry.
Written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism ("Drumline"), "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" focuses on the Peeples, a well-off East Coast family celebrating a reunion weekend in the Hamptons. The idyllic retreat is interrupted when Wade (Craig Robinson) shows up looking to propose to Grace (Kerry Washington). Perry, the acclaimed writer, director, producer and star, is presenting the film.
"I worked with Tyler on a movie he did called 'Daddy's Little Girls,'" Robinson told Movieline in 2011. "I can't say enough good things about him. He was way cool and down to earth. He put me in a scene, and the scene didn't make it into the final cut. But we were having so much fun on the scene that I did -- it was so funny -- that when I got...

Paranormal Activity 4 took first place at the box office this weekend, though its comparatively underwhelming gross suggests audiences are growing tired of the perennial horror franchise. Alex Cross also missed the mark, though overall box office was still up around 10 percent thanks to impressive holdover business from Argo and Hotel Transylvania. The fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity scared up $29 million from 3,412 locations this weekend. For any other low-budget horror movie, this would be a fantastic start, but this franchise has established a track record, and with that track record comes expectations. On this same weekend last year, Paranormal Activity 3 set an October opening record with $52.6 million, while Paranormal Activity 2 debuted to $40.7 million the year before. Of course, Paramount is still going to make truckloads of money on this movie, and a fifth installment is apparently on the way for next year. Still, without a miraculous second weekend hold (unlikely,...

Both horror sequel "Paranormal Activity 4" and Tyler Perry's action makeover in "Alex Cross" came in far below box office expectations in their opening weekend.
After a disappointing $15 million Friday, "PA4" fell by 38% on Saturday (box office usually goes up on Saturday) and is estimated to reach only $30.2 million for the weekend. That follows a $40.7 million opening for "PA2" and a $52.6 million opening for "PA3." The "PA4" opening is still solid considering the film's reported $5 million budget, but the sudden reversal in grosses has to be worrying for long term health of the series. By comparison, the "Saw" franchise posted consistent openings in the $30 million range for installments two through five.
Tyler Perry may want to rethink a move into action, as his debut as James Patterson's beloved detective "Alex Cross" stumbled out of the gate with just $11.8 million for the weekend. That's lower than any previous film...

As expected, Paranormal Activity 4 debuted in first place at the box office on Friday, though its gross was significantly lower than the last two movies in the franchise. The other new opener Alex Cross wasn't all that impressive either, and it's on pace for the worst debut ever for a movie starring Tyler Perry. Overall, though, business was booming on Friday thanks to impressive holdover performances from Argo, Hotel Transylvania and more.Paranormal Activity 4 earned an estimated $15 million on Friday. That includes $4.5 million from midnight and 9 p.m. Thursday shows, though Paramount is refusing to properly separate out those Thursday night grosses. Even including that boost, Paranormal Activity 4's debut was way off from the last movie's $26.3 million start, and even lower than Paranormal Activity 2's $20.1 million. For the weekend, Paramount is expecting $33.5 million, which is a huge decrease from the last movie's record-setting $52.6 million.The...

Atlanta — Investigators were trying Wednesday to find the cause of a fire that ripped through a simulated streetscape at Tyler Perry's Atlanta studios, sending flames soaring into the night sky.
There were no reports of injuries from the blaze that began shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday and burned through the exterior facade of a large building, Atlanta Fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said.
"It was all in flames," Dorothy Ware, who lives in a high-rise apartment next door to the studio complex, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Flames shot as high as nearby trees, which are about as high as a six-story building, Ware said.
"The building started popping," Ware said. "Whatever the fire was hitting, was blowing up. There were plenty of sparks coming over here where we are."
More than 100 firefighters responded to the four-alarm blaze.
The fire never reached inside the building because of its concrete masonry construction behind the facade.

Despite having built an entertainment empire, Tyler Perry is still unable to convincingly assume the mantle of leading man
Of all the adjectives used to describe Tyler Perry, inconspicuous tends not to be one of them. The stage-play-impresario-turned-movie-and-television-brand has never shied away from taking credit for his ubiquitous work, and his tendency to affix his name to everything has made him the butt of jokes: it's a miracle he hasn't yet made Tyler Perry Presents: Tyler and the Perries, a Tyler Perry Film.
But in truth, Perry's role in his empire has left little room for the actual Tyler Perry. Granted, he's given himself a role in 10 out of the 11 films he's made, but the majority of those have been as his iconic drag character Madea, and in the films where he has acted out of drag, he's only taken supporting roles as part of an ensemble. That changed this...

In yet another stupidly crowded weekend at the box office (in such a crowded marketplace where only one new release debuted on more than 2,200 screens) we had yet another solid surprise, as the low-budget Act of Valor topped the box office with a $24.7 million debut. Relativity bought the $12 million production for $13 million and then spent another $30-$40 million to market it. Said marketing campaign highlighted the film's lone quirk -- that it starred actual Navy Seals and allegedly presented a more accurate picture of how such soldiers conduct themselves in the battlefield (they also bought a couple Super Bowl ads and screened the crap out of the film all over the country prior to release). Of course, such lofty attempts at realism didn't prevent a Perils of Pauline subplot (Roselyn Sanchez plays a kidnapped CIA operative who must be rescued by these manly men from torturous bad guys), but the...

It was a military thriller that took top honors this weekend, leading yet another strong February weekend. Act of Valor [Rt:30%, Cb:3.5/5] debuted at number one with over $24 million, bringing in double its reported $12 million production cost. Even more impressive, the movie has no big names to attract audiences, but it managed to handily outperform several movies that did. The phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" had a particular resonance for Tyler Perry this weekend. His latest offering Tyler Perry's Good Deeds [Rt:28%, Cb:3.5/5] settled for a distant second place with just $16 million. It's the second lowest opening ever for a Perry flick, just ahead of Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls which earned just $11 million when it opened in 2007. Wanderlust [Rt:58%, Cb:3.5/5], which had the benefit of Judd Apatow for producer and faces like Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston to feature on its posters, belly flopped into eighth place with ...

Starring a group of "active duty Navy SEALs," Act of Valor trounced a handful of movies with major names attached this weekend. The movie wound up in first place with $24.7 million from 3,039 locations, which is just a little bit less than Tyler Perry's Good Deeds, Wanderlust and Gone made combined. The Top 12 earned an estimated $115.8 million this weekend, which is up a whopping 20 percent from the same frame last year. Even without any movie stars, Act of Valor's opening was on the high end for movies that heavily feature modern warfare techniques. It was behind Battle: Los Angeles ($35.6 million) and Jarhead ($27.7 million) but ahead of Behind Enemy Lines ($18.7 million) and Tears of the Sun ($17.1 million), though it was more-or-less on par with these last two titles in estimated attendance. Also, in just two days it outgrossed 2009 Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker ($17 million), reinforcing the idea that overtly...

Active duty Navy SEALs proved much more interesting than Tyler Perry, Jennifer Aniston or Amanda Seyfried on Friday, as Act of Valor easily took first place on its opening day. Good Deeds had a decent start, though it ranks low compared to most of Perry's movies, while Wanderlust and Gone look to be on their way to the discount bin. Act of Valor opened to an estimated $9.05 million on Friday. It had greater inintial attendance than Tears of the Sun and We Were Soldiers, both of which had the support of a popular lead actor (Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson) when they opened around the same time in 2003 and 2002. It did open lower than Battle: Los Angeles ($13.4 million) from last March, though that movie's sci-fi elements surely gave it a major advantage. Based on historical comparisons, Act of Valor looks poised for a weekend tally north of $25 million.Good Deeds earned $5.35 million yesterday,...

At the end of what could become the highest-grossing February in history, four new releases enter the fray this weekend. Act of Valor is targeting first place with a very wide release (3,039 theaters), though it will face tough competition from Tyler Perry's Good Deeds (around 2,800 screens at 2,132 venues). Wanderlust (2,001 theaters) and Gone (2,186 locations) are also debuting this weekend, though it's unlikely either of them creates much of a stir.Act of Valor is easily one of Relativity Media's most aggressively marketed movies so far. Beginning with the debut trailer last October and continuing through four Super Bowl commercials earlier this month (two pre-game, one in-game, and one post-game spot), the studio has clearly gotten the message out that Act of Valor is "a motion picture event starring active duty Navy SEALs." Whether that's an event that's interesting to a wide audience remains to be seen*most previews skirt...

The swivel chairs made their first appearance last night on NBC's hyped singing competition The Voice, and from the coaches to the contestants' talent, the show worked in surprising ways. As some delicious icing, it took a big swing at American Idol when Frenchie Davis auditioned, explaining how the Fox show ditched her because she masturbated on a web site called Daddy's Little Girls. The Voice started badly, with the coaches singing "Crazy," the kind...

With a mother from Ghana and a father from Sierra Leone, Idris Elba was brought up in east London before finding fame in America. As he takes his place in Kenneth Branagh's Thor, we send Afua Hirsch, half-Ghanaian herself, to unpick this most modern of British actors
Idris Elba wants to know, on a scale of one to 10, how intimidating I find him in person. "Do you think I'm terrifying?" he asks. "I always wondered about that."
It's a glorious spring afternoon in south London's leafy Richmond and we are lounging in sunlight in an old-fashioned hotel bar. Elba, who is sitting sideways on the sofa opposite me, has moulded his tall frame into the cushions and is chuckling with a gruff laugh. He needs a shave – there are speckles of grey in his stubble – but other than that the 38-year-old is instantly recognisable.
How you would recognise him depends on your TV sensibilities.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 slays Megamind, Unstoppable, The Next Three Days and more at the weekend box office...
Did you know that people still like Harry Potter? Seriously! After seven books and seven movies, people still aren't over Harry Potter, and the eighth movie will probably shape up to be even bigger than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1's incredible $125 million weekend. Staggering, isn't it? Even without the allure of 3D, somehow a well-made movie with a history of impressive showings managed to exceed even my lofty expectations.
To put it another way, Megamind (second place, $16 million) topped the box office for two weekends in a row. It's been out for three weekends now, and it's made just under $110 million dollars. Harry Potter exceeded that in three days. It drew over $30,000 per screen! That's a staggeringly high amount for a movie that played on 4125 different screens.

I thought this may be the first weekend a new Tyler Perry film didn't hit the #1 spot in its opening frame, but a quick look back and Daddy's Little Girls, Meet the Browns and The Family that Preys all missed the top spot so it's nothing new as his latest will come in second to Clash of the Titans, which will take home this week's #1 as it got off to a good start with an estimated $26.4 million on Friday. Added to its Thursday midnight total of approximately $4.2 million pushes its tally over $30 million.
The Internet is running rampant with negative chatter regarding the rush-job 2D-to-3D conversion of Titans, which is certainly not up to par and rather embarrassing, but to slam the film on a whole is a bit over the top in my opinion, and to those that have seen it, tell me the ending when Perseus receives...
