Fry, Leela and Bender become superheroes
Tweekums26 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After doing some menial work for the professor Fry and Leela are aching somewhat but Dr. Zoidberg has just the thing for them; "Dr. Flimflam's Miracle Cream". Amazingly it works; in fact it more than works; it turns them into super strong, super fast superheroes! They decide to become a crime fighting duo until Bender decides to join them... then they become a crime fighting trio: The New Justice Team; Captain Yesterday (Fry), Clobberella (Leela) and Super King (Bender). Things go well until they are summoned to foil a robbery at the Natural History Museum which is expected to take place on the day Leela's parents are due to take a once in a lifetime trip to the surface. Leela has it all worked out; catch the thief at nine o'clock, then meet her parents at the museum at ten; it should work apart from the fact that the thief is an hour late. While the team are thwarting the robbery Leela's parents come and go, assuming she isn't there because she is ashamed of them. They may have stopped the theft; but the crook, known as The Zoo Keeper, escapes. Feeling guilty Leela tells her parents why she couldn't be there... then her father tells a couple of friends and soon The Zoo Keeper has learnt her secret identity! He threatens that he will kill her parents if the New Justice Team don't commit the robbery for him!

This was a decent episode that is sure to be enjoyed by anybody who enjoyed watching slightly cheesy superheroes cartoons as a child; they even have their own New Justice League theme song which replaces the regular Futurama end theme. The villain is slightly lame which is in keeping with the superhero spoof. The story of Leela arranging for her parents to visit the surface only for them to return to the sewers thinking that she was ashamed of them was quite touching; as was their reaction when they learnt why she missed their meeting. When I first learnt that Leela was a mutant rather than an alien I was a little disappointed but now I think it was the right choice by the creators as it gives her character more depth.

The New Justice Team

I thought the premise of this episode was silly with Fry, Leela, and Bender becoming a superhero team. I liked how this was like a homage to old superhero cartoons, like the side plot with Leela's parents and hiding her identity as a superhero to them. It was a decent spoof of superhero cartoons, and a good homage.
