to Mexico and back
MissClassicTV20 November 2015
Barbara Stanwyck plays Julie, the widow of a rancher who's the only one with water during a drought. When he's slain after refusing to give away the water for free, she goes after the suspected killer. David Janssen is Seth, the rancher's best friend, who goes along when Julie tracks the suspect to Mexico. Barbara Stanwyck is really fantastic. At age 51 to Janssen's 27, she actually looks great next to him. Janssen did a lot of westerns in the 1950s when they were popular and he's very believable as a cowboy and is an appealing one at that. Barbara Stanwyck thought so too. She reportedly said "wow" after the director called "cut" after their scene in the mudhole.

I liked this episode. I liked that Barbara Stanwyck is loyal and wants justice for her husband even though she no longer likes the person that he has become. I liked that she looks pretty in a fancy dress during dinner with her husband. But then after the murder of her husband, she and David Janssen's character get on their horses and gallop all the way to Mexico to look for the suspect to bring him back for justice. Harsh settlement life made her tough and she looks the part. Like all westerns, there are plenty of trigger-happy men and women here. It works well.

See! Miss Barbara Stanwyck and David Janssen Mud Wrestle!

Hear! Good actors deliver lousy, clichéd dialog!

Wonder! Why no one bothered to trim David Janssen's chest hair!

Be bored! Out of your skull by an ending you can see coming a mile off!

Speculate! As to the salary Miss Barabara Stanwyck took for appearing in this dog! (She must have been desperate for cash.)

Laugh! At the ludicrous, overwrought ending!

Is it any surprise the screenplay was written by Aaron Spelling? He probably knocked it out in a few hours.

This is TV at its worst. Trite, utterly unimaginative storytelling that does nothing better than waste a half-hour of the viewer's life.

Don't watch this. It might not be lethal, but it's definitely poisonous.

Even with great actors- you still need an interesting story.

I really wanted to like this episode. It had the lovely and great actress, Barbara Stanwyck, and actor David Janssen in the lead parts which made for an interesting duo as we start the story. But this just goes to prove that even with such nice actors, you must have to have an interesting story to make for an entertaining show. This episode was disappointing.

The story involved a drought in place in a western county and the cattlemen are talking to landowner Sid Holman about letting them water their cattle in his lake. Well for some reason, Sid seems hostile about the others needs and wants to charge money for letting the cattlemen to the water. This does not set well with the local ranchers.

During the evening Sid is shot and his wife, Julie played by Ms Stanwyck, is set on finding the killer. Julie has little hopes in the Sheriff so she sets out, with Seth Larker played by Janssen, to find the killer even if it takes them to Mexico.

If for some reason a viewer keeps watching to the end, they are rewarded with a gritty performance by Stanwyck. But for most people, they will lose interest in the episode as it appeared lost from the very beginning. The story was just not that interesting.
