I can overlook the lack of assertiveness for Mary with her lack of follow through in getting Reuben to leave. But she completely ignored William's happy news about selling and then acts peeved that he didn't tell her? But the final straw (and the end of the series for me) is when she proposed on the condition that he continues with a job he hates. WHAT? Who would do this if they truly love someone? It has been made abundantly clear in season 1 that William only kept the place open to keep it in the family. And then his mother's hurtful betrayal compounded with the financial aspect of keeping the business open set the stage for him to sell out. Mary's "love" was tied to what William DOES, not who he IS. I lost all respect for Mary, and the whole scenario was just too much for me.
I'll stick with Doc Martin, tyvm.
