THE WESTERNER "Mrs. Kennedy"1960

This is the fourth episode of the short run western series, THE WESTERNER. The series starred Brian Keith as a wandering cow-hand travelling the southwest United States. Of note here is the creator and producer, Sam Peckinpah. Peckinpah is of course known as the writer and director of, THE WILD BUNCH. This series only ran for 13 episodes in the fall of 1960.

Keith is offered a job helping out on a beat up ranch. The ranch is owned by Paul Richards and his wife Jean Allison. In the mix here is also the uncle of Allison, Wendell Holmes.

The ranch is really nothing to shout about and Allison had enough of the hard life. She wishes to return to her rich family out east. The uncle, Holmes is also flush with several saddle bags full of 20 dollar gold Double Eagles. Keith and Holmes had met on the trail and Keith had saved Holmes from a robbery attempt. He had offered to see that his kin, Allison gave Keith a job when they made the ranch.

It does not take long and the woman of the ranch, Allison, is making moves on the rugged Keith. Keith is not sure he should take her up on the offer, but what the hell. The two are soon at it in a handy hay pile. Allison will do anything to get away from her loser husband, Richards.

Needless to say this soon leads to violence, Richards kills the uncle for his gold, then goes after Keith. Keith is forced to defend himself and Richards is soon ready for a hole in the ground. Allison is still more than happy to swap spit with Keith after the bloodletting. Keith decides that perhaps Miss Allison is not the prize catch she first appeared to be. He mounts up and heads off.

The episode was written by series creator, Sam Peckinpah and John Dunkel. The director was Bernard Kowalski.

Mrs Kennedy
Prismark1017 March 2022
After saving the life of Uncle Henry Hadley.

He is offered the job run by his niece's husband, Marsh Kennedy.

The ranch is failing. Life for the Kennedys is bleak like their marriage.

Mrs Kennedy perks up when she catches Dave Blassingame's eye and they rapidly have an affair.

It is not long before jealousies are aroused. Marsh has had enough of his wife, Uncle Henry and his riches and Dave.

A sparse setting and a slightly creepy story. There is a layered characterisation of Marsh Kennedy.

I was surprised how quickly Dave succumbed to the charms of Mrs Kennedy.

My Dog Is My Conscience

Dave drifts onto hardscrabble farm and a load of trouble. Transplanted southern lady (Jean Allison) can't adjust to barren existence, while husband (Paul Richards) tries hard but can't make a go of it. Rich uncle (Wendell Holmes) arrives and stokes Richards' envy which is already on edge because wife has eyes for Dave. Does she really like Dave or is she just using him? Dave again shows his human side, this time as the other man. Notable for spooky "mind reading" sequence, and for bug-eyed psycho Richards getting a semi-sympathetic role for once. Script missteps by making dog Brown Dave's very uncanny conscience, which may be OK for Lassie but not for a serious episode like this.. Solid story with solid performances and character motivation. Still, it's a bleak picture of frontier life, with a theme and ending that I'm sure made the network and sponsors uneasy.

( With reference to IMDb's choice of quotes from the show, they ought to practice what they preach in terms of spoilers.)

This episode destroys the entire series. SPOILER ALERT

Warning: Spoilers
After watching a few episodes of this short-lived TV series, I was impressed. A couple of the shows were quite good. Then I came across this episode 4. What a disappointment!

The hero of the series, cowboy/drifter Dave Blasingame shows his true colors in this story. He takes the wife of his boss to bed, then when the boss catches up with him, Dave Blasingame shoots the guy dead. Well that's a real morally upright individual!

So we learn that Blasingame is a cheater and a murderer. If this episode had been my first foray into this series, I would not have watched any other shows.

This sordid tale may be why the show didn't make it through the first season. Especially in year 1960, TV censors would have frowned heavily on this "have sex with your boss's wife, then murder the boss" tale.

In addition to that, the story just doesn't flow well, and the phony Southern accents are way overdone.

One star for Mrs. Kennedy.
