C.J. cooking in an apron and floppy hat
robrosenberger13 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This moment always comes upon you sooner than you expect. Leo alive but incapacitated, Jed recruits a new chief of staff. It feels correct to divide the show into three chapters, focusing on story arc: the classic era, the Seabornless era, and the Chief of Staff C.J. era. None of that is a commentary on product; many things will work in this last era, and many fine episodes arise. We'll forget how much has changed...but not always. In this one, with Leo absent and Jed maintaining a hospital vigil, the staff bumbles around directionless. C.J. admonishes Josh to stop eating like a two-year old. You might watch this episode four or five times and not realize Mallory's in it.

Jumping off a Cliff
Sonatine9720 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With Leo in hospital recovering from a major heart attack, his absence has left a vacuum back at the White House. On top of that not only will the peace-keeping force cost the government some $50bn, but the Speaker of the House has insisted on a tax cut of around $300 for kids before he rounds up sufficient support for the peace keepers.

Needless to say with Leo in hospital fighting for his life, and Bartlet is also spending time at his bedside racked with guilt, none of the senior staff have a clue in coordinating policy.

As one senior staff enters hospital a junior staff member has left one and has returned to the White House to continue her work. I am quite surprised by the speediness of her recovery given that less than a week ago she was having major surgery for a pulmonary embolism . Plus the facial wounds seem to have healed very quickly also. To be honest, the timelines between the attack and her recovery are rather vague, but still.

The key moment for me is the private conversation between Bartlet and his outgoing Chief of Staff, with Leo more or less telling him someone else needs to "jump off a cliff" - in other words to take over as CoS permanently.

The surprise choice was most welcome, and was the natural choice in my book.

They show us unbelievable amateurs
Ucurian27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With Leo gone the writers tried to convince us, that Toby and Josh aren't up to the job of Leo. And what they show us is ridiculous. Both act like they never worked in the white house. Josh is deputy chief of staff, it should be a no brainer, that he coordinates the negotiations with Congress and briefes the cabinett.

Instead the act in way incompetent that the new chief of staff would have no choise then to fire them.

Also, it is ridiculous, that the President don't want to appoint an interim Chief of Staff. This is a total unconvincing episode.
