Sweet Smell of Succession
Prismark105 August 2021
This might have been the start of a comeback for Hywel Bennett.

His career was in the doldrums only to be later resurrected with a small role in Pennies from Heaven, Tinker Tailor..... and then Shelley.

Shelley plays Steven Castle the unknown son of gangster Joe Castle who has died.

His rivals want to take over his empire. Steven is university educated and has kept away from his dad's criminal activities.

However Steven is interested in his late father's legitimate business interests. In order to possess that he needs the rivals to declare war on each other. The lure is some jewellery that was meant to be fenced and everyone is after.

Carter finds romance with a police secretary. She is put off when he pressurises her to take a sneak peek on his promotion prospects.

This is really Bennett's episode. He still has his baby face looks and charisma.

The Don is Dead
TheFearmakers23 June 2021
Described by the other reviewer as influenced by The Godfather with the son of a mobster taking over albeit reluctantly but it's more like The Don is Dead with tons of dialogue, a mistress and bouts of melodrama, and isn't one of the best episodes. Season Three gets better later on.

Watch it for Bennett

Warning: Spoilers
Another average episode. This one mines THE GODFATHER for inspiration with its tale of succession amid a sprawling crime family. Hywel Bennett is an excellent guest star and makes the most of his small role, but the rest seems to have been written on autopilot.
