Episode 69 concludes the 3rd season with a one-hour broadcast

Episode 69 begins with the ailing Jessica welcoming several different suitors at her hospital bedside, including a final,one-shot appearance from Benson Le Beau(Robert Guillaume).Danny proposes to Polly at a fancy restaurant, which leaves her ecstatic but unsure about whether or not he can handle marriage.Burt awakens from a happy nightmare, all his dreams a reality, being sheriff and helping people, and looking forward to the birth of Mary's baby(and Mary still unable to share her concern about the true nature of her child's father). He later receives a visit from Elmore Tibbs(Hamilton Camp),corrupt owner of a chain of massage parlors, who kidnaps Burt and Danny for some sleazy action at an adult motel(perfect material for blackmail).Corinne and Eunice both sneak into Dutch's bed in the middle of the night,an arrangement he doesn't want to change,at least until next week("eenie meenie miney moe,one of you has got to go,who it is I do not know, and this hurts worse than a broken toe!..." there's more, but why spoil it?) After listening to a recording left by the dying Jessica,The Major has a rare lucid moment, reminiscing about walking her when she was a little girl, followed by another suicide attempt by Leslie, who realizes that she can't kill herself, training her gun on Billy instead.Back in court,Carol again lies on the stand, this time about about why she left Jodie at the altar, then her mother Mrs.David(Peggy Pope)perjures herself about Wendy being abducted by a woman and some men in Jodie's apartment(revealing the "woman" to be Jodie himself; needless to say,the genuine article objects to the slander of his lifestyle).Taking the stand a day later,Jodie refuses to be intimidated by the prying prosecutor(Haversham:"did you ever frequent a bar known as Barney's?" Jodie:"was that you?"),maintaining his pride against tough odds. This was a one-hour broadcast to bring season 3 to an end(2 episodes in syndication).
