A series of excellent story lines mesh together so well
SLionsCricketreviews2 December 2015
It is often said to be one of the best episodes of the entire series, "The Puffy Shirt" is the first episode to feature Jerry Stiller in the role of Frank Costanza. In this episode, George is told by a woman that he has the most beautiful hands, and that he may have a job in the hand modeling industry! Jerry is forced to wear a puffy shirt on the Today Show, designed by Kramer's extremely quiet talking girlfriend and George must also bear the troubles of moving back in with his parents.

The scene between Frank and Estelle, where she claims to have always admired his hands, was excellent and George's obsession with keeping his hands in the condition that they are was perfectly in line with his character- obsessive and pathetic.

"The Puffy Shirt" is every bit as good as "The Mango", putting its characters in the most bizarre of places. A puffy shirt and hand modeling is all that is needed to make this episode the work of brilliance that it is. The acting is terrific, as per usual, and even Jerry Seinfeld himself is more than good in the role.

A classic episode
PL19812 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
"Seinfeld" was perhaps one of the most well-written, intelligent and hysterically hilarious television series that I have seen in my lifetime and, watching this episode in syndication, I must concede that this is one of the episodes which I love.

Jerry and Elaine go out to dinner with Kramer and his new girlfriend. Kramer's new girlfriend has an unusual trait of talking so low and softly that no-one can hear her. This is fine when Kramer is there to "translate" but things take a turn for the worse when Kramer goes to the bathroom and Jerry and Elaine are left alone with his girlfriend. In the awkwardness of the moment, Jerry unwittingly makes a deal with her "the low-talker" that has the potential for acute embarrassment and humiliation in front of a wide audience. When Jerry finds out what he has agreed to, it is seemingly too late to get out of it. Can he salvage the situation?

Meanwhile George, unhappily enduring a dinner with his parents after having moved back in with them, finds that his hands have the potential for both commercial success and a new romance. But will George's newfound luck last?

The episode is a classic example of the quirkiness and originality of the series in coming up with bizarre new concepts. The episode unfolds well, with all actors playing their part to perfection (a particular honorable mention must go to Wendel Meldrum for her role as Leslie the low-talker) and the plot and script is absolutely hilarious. In this episode, I found all the elements that I loved about this series

"I don't wanna be a pirate"

What starts a great opportunity for Jerry soon becomes a nightmare in "The Puffy Shirt".

Jerry, while helping Elaine with a charity event, is at dinner with Kramer and his new girlfriend Leslie, who is a clothing designer. The chatting goes well... except for when Leslie speaks. Because neither Jerry or Elaine can hear what she says (she is dubbed a "low- talker"). When Kramer leaves to use the restroom, Jerry and Elaine are left alone with Leslie, who asks a question. Jerry and Elaine answer in the affirmative.

Meanwhile, at another dinner, George is with his parents on the first night after he is reduced to having moved back home. Needing to get some air, he runs into a woman, who stops him and presents him with an unexpected opportunity.

"The Puffy Shirt" does start out slowly. George is upset at the turn of events in his life at the beginning, but midway he's hook, line, and sinker in his new profession (maintaining the necessary appearance). The significant moment in this episode comes when Kramer brings over the titular item. Which Leslie has created- and expects Jerry to wear it. Because he's helping to promote Elaine's benefit show to help the homeless- live on the Today Show.

The laughter that will come from this keeps building and building, including a sort-of reference to season four's "The Contest", when the story of the person previously in George's position is told. And the end is one of a few episodes where EVERYONE is directly affected by the outcome- in this case of Jerry's mortifying appearance on the Today Show (with then-cohost Bryant Gumbel as himself).

"I don't want to be a pirate!"

Season 5, Episode 2, "The Puffy Shirt"

"The Puffy Shirt" should be on anybody's list of the greatest Seinfeld episodes ever. It's one of those episodes where all the threads and all the plots come together to a truly satisfying conclusion.

The actors are all on the top of their game - especially Jason Alexander. The episode is a defining moment for George's character. But Jerry is terrific too, extremely awkward but also hilarious. The writing for the episode, above all, story and dialog both, is one of the true highlights of the show's entire run. A classic piece of television that benefits from repeated viewings.

one of the finest half hours ever
whoneedsascreenname19 June 2023
Without a doubt one of the finest episodes of anything ever written -- Larry David at his best -- as well as the entire cast.

So many iconic bits in this one, aside from the actual 'puffy shirt,' including the the low-talker, George the hand model's 'milky white' hands, the oven mitts, the master of your domain reference, Bryant Gumbel, Estelle's bologna sandwiches, the iron and on and on -

While this ep is remembered for the pirate shirt of course, this is a particularly strong outing for Jerry Stiller and Estelle Harris as George's parents, and for Jason Alexander as well. 10 stars all the way around.

He Followed Through

Jerry goes through utter humiliation when he unwittingly agrees to wear a shirt on the Today show. It is Kramer's girlfriend who speaks so low we can't hear her. The shirt is an ugly pirate thing out of the 18th Century and her career depends on his wearing it. Of course, it all goes south. The other plot involves George becoming a hand model. The best part is the story he is told about a guy who did so much modeling his hands became like crabs. But this is all for naught. Jerry's expressions as he appears on the show are priceless. He is doing the honorable thing but can only take so much. Of course, Kramer dances around, causing damage wherever he goes.

George has hands
ThunderKing620 March 2023
Puffy shirt is a classic

On the month of March on the number date of the 20th. In the year number of 2,023rd

What was this episode about?: Jerry wears a puffy shirt and does not want to be a pirate

Kramer dates a low talker

George has hand once more and becomes a hand modeler.

Elaine was generous in this. So what happened on seasons 7, 8 and 9.

Totally different personas.

The story and the production overview: A classic iCONIC episode. So much amusement.

Though the low talker should be sent to jail for assaulting George and ending his modelling career.

Highlight: I don't wanna be a pirate. Jerry viewing the shirt for the first time.

Laugh meter: 10

Girlfriend attractiveness level: 6. Good loookin milf.

What can be learned?: bring a low talker translator

Verdict: the shirt wasn't that bad...

He wasn't master of his domain Warning: Spoilers
This was a silly episode, the outcome to these episodes are all just that they NEVER win. They never get their "way", they ALWAYS LOOSE IN THE END.

And maybe that's the point, I mean what would a show be if all of them were predictable and all had happy endings. Also the story on how Ray got his hand forever cramped made me chuckle.

Puffy shirt, hands and The Contest
safenoe2 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm enjoying re-watching some of the Seinfeld episodes that I watched when it debuted all those years ago. It's hard to believe this episode, The Puffy Shirt, is over 30 years old, yes that's three decades, yet it's timeless. Jerry being forced to wear a puffy shirt on the Today Show and interviewed by an astonished Bryant Gumbel, was one for the ages. Also George's short-lived career as hand model managed to draw applause from the live audience when he referred to the season four episode The Contest.

The live audience also applauded when Kramer made his signature entrance. The Puffy Shirt is worth watching.
