THE SANDBAGGERS "The Most Suitable Person" 1978

The SANDBAGGERS was a UK series set during the Cold War. The series follows a small unit of the SIS, which deals with various intelligence gathering problems. (Or eliminating said problems) The cast includes Roy Marsden, Ray Lonnen, David Glyder, Liz Bennett, Richard Vernon, Bob Sherman and Jerome Willis. The series ran for 20 episodes between 1978 and 1980.This is the forth episode of the production run.

Roy Marsden is in charge of a covert action section of the UK Secret Service, the SIS.

This one starts with SIS operations chief, Marsden looking for some replacement "Sandbaggers". The unit has lost two men to "on the job" deaths and the spots need to be filled. The training section tells Marsden that the pickings are lean, except for one female trainee. The woman, Diane Keen, is called in and offered a position.

While this is happening, a man from the Tangiers office is found murdered in Gibraltar. Marsden is forced to send the last "Sandbagger", Ray Lonnen to look into the matter. The bosses are not happy here as there is a beef going on with MI-5 about who is in charge at Gibraltar.

There is also a possible security leak in the SIS office. Marsden's CIA counterpart, Bob Sherman, has tipped Marsden to an operative with SIS who is seeing an outside psychiatrist. This is of course a no-no in the intelligence game. This will need to be looked into quick like.

The new girl, Keen, is flown out to help Lennon with the murder of the Tangier contact. She goes over the various files etc for any clues. Lonnen is quickly in the hot seat as someone tries to knock the man off. First he narrowly escapes a hit and run attempt, then his car is shot up. It looks like a possible Red spy ring is on the loose in Gib.

The new girl, Keen, quickly shows her stuff, and uncovers a plot to shoot down a top level Government official in Gibraltar. A missile attack on the Government type is planned when he flies to a meeting in London. The local Police are let in on the plan and the Red types are gobbled up. The matter also settles the beef with MI-5. It seems they had the same info but failed to act on it. They thought it was just a rumour. This of course makes MI-5 look bloody stupid. Back in London, Marsden has also rooted out and plugged the leak problem.

The more I watch of this series, the more impressed I am.
