"The Road to Jericho" is a quiet character study featuring only two guest stars. Robert Middleton plays Arthur Sutro, discovered by Johnny Yuma staked to an ant hill by Indians who objected to his theft of a peace pipe. All his life Sutro has made few friends, and being indebted to Yuma hardly changes his demeanor, insisting that Johnny is now responsible for him. Leaving Sutro behind with some money, Johnny comes upon a man of God out in the desert, Christopher Portal (Warren Stevens), whose life is governed by the Latin phrase above the entrance to his tiny abode: "Veritas, Caritas, Pax" (Truth, Charity, Peace). The only books he possesses are a Bible, a dictionary, and the complete works of Shakespeare, earning a living by mining for a pittance of gold ore, as much as $3 a week helping out weary travelers. Unfortunately, his tranquil existence is threatened by the greedy Sutro, firmly convinced that there is a cache of gold stashed away, despite repeated statements to the contrary. The climax finds Portal in forgiving mode: "he prayeth best who loveth best all things both great and small, for the dear Lord who loveth us made and loveth all."
