"The Ballad of Danny Brown" opens with Johnny Yuma once again being shunned by an entire town, anticipating the return of Danny Brown (William Bryant, seventh of nine), a gunman released after 8 years behind bars. Anxiously awaiting the reunion is his longtime sweetheart Emily (Gail Kobe, previously seen in "Night on a Rainbow"), while harboring bitter resentment is Vergil Hardy (Harry Bartell, last of three), whose son was shot by Brown in a fair fight. Vergil's other son Isham (Stephen Joyce, later seen in "The Hostage") remains faithful to his father, meeting resistance from the proud rebel, happy to earn his wages from a grateful Emily. Longtime cowboy star Tex Ritter (father of John) makes a rare, penultimate television appearance as the town Marshall, who appeases the townspeople as they see fit, unwilling to defend Danny Brown even after the torching of Emily's newly purchased homestead. Ritter had just four more feature film roles before his death in 1974.
