Season Two ends on a Laugh, Literally
theanarchistclubhouse17 April 2020
It can be nice to step aside from the seriousness of a dramatic show from time to time. And in this episode we get to have fun watching the eccentric Hackert family face the consequences for the choices they've made.

Problem is, these people march to the beat of their own drum. Repeatedly Lieutenant Parker gets flummoxed with the logic of the case. It's not as simple as locking up some punk who robbed a jewelry store. No, no. These are Peter Pan crimes that require a lighter touch.

By episode's end we all get to laugh along with this great show. After near cancellation following the first season, 'Naked City' came roaring back with 32 hour-long episodes in Season 2. Quite an accomplishment.

A different definition of right and wrong?

Warning: Spoilers
There are a handful of episodes from Naked City's second season that get a perfect IMDb score from me, and this is one of them. It's a well-written and well-played blend of drama and black comedy. It probably wouldn't work so well if not for the comic timing of Mildred Natwick. In the story, she plays housekeeper to a prominent family and decides that in order for her employers to continue enjoying the good life to which they are accustomed, she must resort to various jewel robberies. The unusual plot reaches a turning point when she's eventually apprehended and taken downtown. In an uproarious scene at the precinct, it seems as if she may not be held accountable for her crimes after all. I think what I love most about this episode is not how a criminal is brought to justice, but how someone can experience justice as something that is unreasonable in the face of absurdity. Apparently, some people live in a world where right and wrong seem just as silly as they are.

Terrible episode. Spare yourself and don't watch

Naked City has 7.999 million good stories but this episode was not one of the 8 million. I can't even imagine why the quality cast allowed themselves to be suckered into this episode. I'm guessing they only did it because they were under contract. The sad thing is the story concept could have been used very well to produce the normal high quality we see in almost all the other episodes. Somewhere along the line someone decided to turn this into slapstick and utter foolishness. The final scene where we have everyone sitting in the precinct laughing was very hard to sit through. I couldn't find my remote fast enough to shut it off. My only hope is the next episode which will be the start of the new season will return us to the real Naked City.
