A nice southern gothic style story, with a great twist ending.
b_kite30 June 2019
Our episode starts with the lovely Jewel who meets Vance at the department of motor vehicles. Jewel flirts with Vance who works there mainly due to the fact that his wife Angie's father runs the place. While Jewel catches Vance's wondering eye, she is determined to have him for herself one way or another, this includes venturing out to her friend Cora who practices voodoo. The two conduct varies spells on both Angie and her father, who eventually catches him and Jewel having sex in department building itself. Jewel has the old man killed, and when she confronts Vance at his own house he gets upset and hits her. Now Jewel plans the ultimate way to have Vance to herself forever, but, it backfires horrendously. Honestly this probably isn't the greatest episode ever, but, after that dud of a last one I gotta say I had a lot of fun with it. There's all kinds of backstabbing and double crossing witch leads to probably what may be my favorite twist ending this series has produced yet right next to "Mannequins of Horror". Some of the acting is a bit lacking, but, Olivia Brown of "Miami Vice" fame does well, and famed producer Manny Coto who directed "Dr. Giggles" is behind the camera, giving this a nice southern gothic styling.

Clever and seductive revenge like epiosde of the series!

This episode of "Monsters" from season 2 number 5 during 1989 called "Love Hurts" is one that's interesting and builds with tension and it has a seductive tease to it. Set somewhere in the deep south as you can tell by the accents it involves an attractive sexy single lady named Jewel(Olivia Brown Det. Trudy Joplin from "Miami Vice") who goes to the local DMV to renew her driver's license and she's attracted to Vance(Henry Brown) the man who works there. So a plan is formed that's a scheme for Jewel to get what she wants no matter what even though Vance has a pregnant wife. A little black magic in the form of voodoo plays a part here. The episode is sexy too as you get to see some hot seductive love making scenes as Olivia was some eye candy sporting that sexy black bra! Only this episode twist things go wrong in a gory manner! It involves that of some organs! Overall well done episode that's sexy and it twist as it was made by Olivia Brown.

Average episode saved by a gruesome twist ending.

Warning: Spoilers
Monsters: Love Hurts starts in the Motor Division Department where Vince Waddle works as a lowly pen-pusher, he is frustrated with life being tied down married to Carla but his life changes when Julie (Olivia Brown) walks through the door & they instantly fall for each other. Vince has a wife & baby on the way so cannot commit to Julie but she is impatient & uses Black Magic to get what she wants. Julie uses ancient spells to get what she wants & make Vince hers forever, however her plan takes an unexpected & horrific turn for the worse for bother her & Vince...

Episode five from season two of Monsters this originally aired in the US during October 1989, directed by Manny Coto while watching the first fifteen or so minutes of Love Hurts I was getting ready to write a scathing review here on the IMDb & was thinking that it was right down there with the worst the series has to offer. But, & there is a but, then the last few minutes redeems the whole episode with a really good twist ending which is surprisingly gruesome which doesn't hurt. Every good twist ending needs an effective build up & while it is effective I suppose it's also quite boring & repetitive with some bad dialogue & little in the way of action or incident. At only twenty odd minutes at least it's short & as I said the ending is definitely worth the wait.

One aspect of Love Hurts which I found really annoying was the bad, bad acting & especially the accents. Seriously some of the Southern accents are just terrible & at times it's very hard to even understand what's being said with Olivia Brown the prime culprit. Love Hurts tries to mix a steamy romance with a bit of Fatal Attraction (1987) with some supernatural horror, Olivia Brown is seen in her underwear a lot & there's a funny scene in which she seduces Vince with an eye test chart making him spell the word 'THROB' out! The horror element is saved for the end which features some gory special make-up effects of a sliced up walking zombie missing some vital organs.

Love Hurts isn't really that good for the first fifteen minutes with a fairly boring if per functionary plot & some horrible accents but the last few minutes are worth the wait with a cool twist ending that is one of the more gruesome seen in the series.

Awful acting
Leofwine_draca3 August 2015
LOVE HURTS is a Southern Gothic-themed episode of the MONSTERS TV show as well as being an all-black episode. It involves a scheming couple of lovers who decide that they'd be better off without the guy's pregnant wife, so his lover decides to employ the services of voodoo in order to help them down the path to true love.

Inevitably it all ends up going horribly wrong, but not before the viewer has had to experience some of the most excruciatingly over the top acting I've seen in a while. None of the actors here speak their dialogue in a reasoned manner, instead they shout and overact all the while and the addition of the broad southern accents is the icing on a grating cake. Sure, there's a gruesome twist right at the end, but it's not worth sitting through the whole thing for.

Fooling around with that old black magic

Warning: Spoilers
Jewel (a nicely tart performance by the sultry Olivia Brown) enlists the assistance of her voodoo-practicing friend Angie (sharply played by Valentina Quinn) so she can have the married Vance (a sturdy portrayal by Henry Brown) all to herself.

Director Manny Coto not only keeps the engrossing story moving along at a constant pace, but also ably crafts a tangy'n'tasty Southern Gothic atmosphere. Edithe Swensen's smart script offers a neat examination on the themes of greed and obsession. The two leads generate a good deal of genuine heat. Renn Woods provides sturdy support as the suspicious Cora. The surprise twist ending is a deliciously macabre doozy. A fine show.
