Minder has long been my favorite all-time television show, but even I have to admit the adversarial relationship between McCann and Daley got stretched a bit thin at times. Well, in this episode we get Daley and McCann teaming up to save the day. Their natural, real-life friendship is allowed to shine through in this plot, and man is it every satisfying.
Dave takes some time off from The Winchester Club. So he drafts Terry McCann into minding the bar.
From that simple premise we get a rollicking adventure involving feuding cops (Rycott and Jones), menacing villains (George Baker guest stars), Mark Farmer as Justin delivering some sassy lines, Dennis Waterman's fairly recent ex-wife playing Dave's wife, and some top-notch comedic lines for both Arthur and Terry.
The highlight's gotta be George Cole's performance in the courtroom, trying to save Dave's liquor license. Whoever directed that scene should have won whatever the British equivalent of the Emmys are.
The solution to the ''mystery" is pretty funny and denouement a fitting end to the plot.
Even though Waterman's days on the show were numbered, this episode illustrated that when the writing was sharp the show could still hit a lot of high notes.
