Arlene Golonka highlighted.

I'm watching the series from beginning to end. Makes it worthwhile getting through the stinker episodes to view wonderful episodes like this. Pretty Arlene Golonka never disappoints when the spotlight is on her. Though like all the cast struggling through weak scripts quite often. Shame mostly here she was in unflattering granny outfits.

Judith McConnell as Pamela isn't surprising she was in the Miss America pageant in the 60s. All eyes were on here when she took off her coat to reveal how stunning she was. Ivor Francis as Carl Brady was a classic TV staple. Here he nailed the deadpan stoically disinterested newspaper guy tolerating boring Howard. Elmo (Vince Barnett) had an unusually high amount of screen time that was a treat. With a keen eye for the ladies he delivered some funny one liners.

Thoroughly Modern Millie

Warning: Spoilers
Always enjoy episodes that feature the pretty and underrated Arlene Golonka. In this one she is named the best dressed woman in the county by the Mt. Pilot newspaper. Now feeling she is a fashion trendsetter, Millie tosses aside the mini-skirt in favor of long length dresses, much to the dismay of the men of Mayberry.

You would think this episode would play entirely the opposite with Millie introducing shorter skirts and hot pants and the citizens of Mayberry being shocked by the display of feminine flesh. But instead the town is all for shorter skirts.

Sam's reaction is pretty odd seeing Millie in the new longer length style. Arlene looks great in anything, particularly the outfits she introduces in this show. But he is definitely uncomfortable and isn't sure what to say. His attitude is even worse at the dance where Millie is to get her award. When the fashion editor shows up wearing a green mini dress Sam and all the menfolk focus all their attention on her, ignoring Millie. Sam even passes Millie up in favor of dancing with the fashion editor when the band plays "their" song. It doesn't speak well of Sam at all and he never gets his come-up-pence. Instead, Millie decides to go back to wearing short skirts and everything goes back to normal.

Designing women

Howard turns in his "Mayberry Happenings" community news column to his editor Carl Brady (character actor Ivor Francis) of the Mount Pilot Clarion. He informs Howard that his fashion editor Pamela Bennington (Judith McConnell, "The Weather Man") has compiled a list of the five best-dressed women in the county. Millie was ranked first based on her observations at social gatherings over the past year. She realizes she is a trendsetter now and goes to Mount Pilot to buy a new dress and boots. The women swarm her to see the new style- a longer length- while the men lament it. Martha, like the other wives, are influenced to switch their wardrobe to that design. Emmett holds a husband's meeting to stop it and insists Howard cancels an invitation for the fashion editor to come to Mayberry. Howard refuses. Her arrival brings unexpected consequences.
