Two men and the woman that comes between them
Mr-Fusion19 April 2016
It's a nagging mystery how a young woman could rebuff Thomas in favor of Higgins, one that has Magnum flummoxed (Higgins is loving this) and determined to call this woman out on her game. But what begins lighthearted enough turns into a genuine conflict between the two men, even as the plot thickens (complete with a sumo wrestler, a dwarf and a load of snooty British accents).

Magnum screws up and eventually has to make things right, and that's where this episode gets good. The two work things out, and it even humanizes Higgins to an extent.

Bros before hos indeed.

I like this one!

Warning: Spoilers
A comic Magnum with a name like Tropical Madness what else could it be but silly. Higgens and Magnum have a romantic triangle. The viewer wonders and laughs at how Magnum gets beat out by the older Higgens. The humor is liberally spread out, and suddenly Magnum realizes something smells like a fishy con. Of course Higgens is star struck and angry. The Magnum vs Higgens rivalry intensifies, but in the the viewers see Magnum cares and is worried for Higgens. There is a few good plot twists and a different but good ending for Tropical Madness. Excellent writing for a classic series. 7 stars.

Tropical Thunder

Warning: Spoilers
Jennifer Chapman, a young English lady (played by American actress Devon Ericson) takes a liking to our beloved Higgins. Naturally, Magnum suspects Jennifer of very ulterior motives, as in his eyes, how could such a lithe British beauty fall in love with another British/Irish potato like Higgins? Of course, Magnum thinks all women fall in love with men who resemble Magnum.

Shades of 007 in this one, with two comic crooks on the tail of Jennifer. One looks like Oddjob (Harold Sakata) from Goldfinger. The other was the one who looks like Nick Nack (Herve Villechaize) from The Man With the Golden Gun.

"A sumo wrestler....and a dwarf!"
DVD_Connoisseur31 October 2018
"Tropical Madness" is a tongue-in-cheek Higgins-centric tale involving a beautiful "English rose" with potential ulterior motives, a large "sumo" and a "dwarf".

In the middle of all the chaos, a bewildered Thomas Magnum tries to make sense of it all.

The strongest John Hillerman episode to-date, the viewer can't help but warm even more to the stiff upper lipped Higgins. He is "bloody marvellous" here, an absolute joy.

9 out of 10. A lighter episode following "Memories are Forever" but a welcome palette cleaner nonetheless.

A different side of Higgins

Sweet, charming episode showing Higgins to be a little than his usual composed self with the ladies. The plot is entirely forgettable, but we are treated to Magnum getting beat up by a sumo wrestler and a dwarf and Higgins nervously rehearsing his opening lines for his date with a lovely young Englishwoman. Well worth watching.
