A "Hail Mary" for Magnum
DVD_Connoisseur3 November 2018
One of the weaker episodes of "Magnum", this tale requires a mammoth suspension of disbelief and a love for American Football.

A jaw-droppingly illogical moment occurs in the opening scene. Why would a crowd of people rush towards the sound of gunshots and then just stand in plain sight of a potential shooter? Even Magnum himself acts this way halfway through the proceedings.

Not one of my favourite episodes by a long throw, this represents a "busted play" during the second season.

6 out of 10. It's not a bad episode, it just failed to engage me.

April Ann Metro
safenoe8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Kimber Hinkson guest stars as the ill-fated April Ann Metro, whose murder was treated in a very cursory fashion quite sadly. It's like April Ann Metro was kind of the plot device to move things along, and her death was even more cursory than the ones you see on Murder, She Wrote.

Anyway, One More Summer is about the glory days of NFL but nowadays it's the concussion and exploitation that would be the dominant themes if One More Summer was rebooted. But anyway, One More Summer is worth watching for the football scenes in Hawaii and seeing Magnum trying to be a star quarterback. It's worth seeing once.

South Honolulu 20?

Warning: Spoilers
The plot contrivance of an homage to "North Dallas Forty" with an aging, yet savvy QB with a country boy persona (Mac Davis) didn't hit. It starts and ends the same way the movie did - It opens with a wild team pool party and ends with a football toss between the two buddies/protagonists. Points for trying, though.

There was Jonathan Higgins with a Henry Higgins moment as he lamented how empty his home was without his protege Magnum (Liza Doolittle), as well. Good try, but could have been better.

One piece that was very true to character was T. C. really trying to play pro football. That was fun. An early scene with Magnum, Rick, and T. C. bantering as they watched the team practicing was classic Magnum. It was also totally within character and believable. And fun.

For me, you could never go wrong with Dick Butkus making a football-related cameo. Another fun inclusion.

A favorite of mine

While I would hesitate to classify this as a great episode, it's memorable to me, mainly because of the football aspect, although the title "One More Summer" is a bit odd, but I digress. The crux of the matter has an unlikeable professional quarterback, played by David Wilson, needing Magnum's help to see who's trying to kill him; they were buds in the Navy together years before. Some familiar faces include Pat Morita, NFL great Dick Butkus, and Louise Sorel. Also, look for a very wooden performance by Kimber Hinkson, who plays April Ann Metro; it's no wonder this is her only acting credit. The best scenes revolve around the football field, especially when Magnum AND T.C. both tryout for the same team, while both of them are keeping a watchful eye on the case at hand. Higgins and Rick also make things interesting. Speaking of interesting, there's a cool twist at the end just when you think the real killer is dead, but I won't spoil the rest. If you're a fan of football, give the episode a shot, and if you don't find it too corny, then you're in for a treat.

My favorite Magnum P I episode!
mm-3923 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My favorite Magnum P I episode! These are the reasons why: A great story! A old buddy who Magnum played football hires Magnum to find out who is trying to kill him! A washed up starting quarterback, who loves the football life style and is super self absorbed child who creates enemies aka it's all about himself. Yes Magnum has many motives and the P I has a huge task at hand. What I love is Magnum has to go undercover as a Quarterback tryout along with T C to crack the case. The background story of the football life, with a few ex pros creates excitement and humor for One More Summer! The double life of detective after practice makes for great intrigue, while humorous Higgens believe Magnum is facing a mid life crises, because Magnum leaves the mansion for the under cover job. The barter between Magnum and Higgens is great, while Higgens hides missing the detective. The major, and minor characters, the story and sub stories arches are directed with a great ending of quarterback and his arm but I will not give away the story here. I love the ending when Magnum tell his old buddy remember to pump fake in the locker room as the crowd cheers. 9 stars
