Alan Vs. The Farmers
ShadeGrenade13 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
When Alan has a dig at farmers on his radio show, the gloves are off. An interview with agriculturalist Peter Baxendale Thomas ( Christopher Morris ) is a disaster, ending with him walking out of the studio in disgust. Alan has to shoot a promotional video for a boating firm. His wife Carol refuses to appear in it, forcing him to hire an actress - Jenny ( Doon Mackichan )...

Superb episode, featuring cameos from Christopher Morris and Simon Pegg, the latter cast as the director of the film Alan is booked to appear in. Some nice dialogue as Alan tries to be 'one of the lads'. The 'Hugh Morris' ( Peter Baynham ) character was featured in a recent B.B.C.-2 documentary about how disabled people have been depicted on television over the years. He has no vocal chords due to cancer of the larynx, and has to speak using an electronic device, giving Alan the excuse to make a string of tasteless jokes.

Funniest moment - Alan's insult-packed encounter with Baxendale Thomas.

Second funniest moment - Jenny goes off to appear in 'The Bill', forcing Alan to replace her with a prop dummy. As the boat passes under a bridge, angry farmers hurl a dead cow at it. Guess who it lands on?

Strong episode with a great Chris Morris cameo

Alan feels the wrath of local farmers and suffers more embarrassment in his dealings with the hotel staff.

I enjoyed this one for Alan's usual hilarious, awkward banter and a nice cameo from Chris Morris.

It has a comical plot with Alan's desperation for work driving much of the humour along with his usual social ineptitude.

All the dialogue is excellent with Alan on top form dealing with the farming community. One scene with a farming union rep played by Chris Morris is for me the highlight of the show. The ongoing joke regarding Alan's television viewing habits being known to the hotel guests is also a great running gag.

Steve Coogan and Morris are excellent and get great support from the supporting cast including Simon Pegg.

For me it's an 8.5/10 but I round upwards.
