HONG KONG – "Murder Royal" – 1960

Rod Taylor headlines this 1960-61 series as a newsman stationed in Hong Kong. Taylor is constantly in trouble with various shady types who are always involving him in their troubles. It usually takes several round of fisticuffs, a dead body or two and a gun battle before things get settled. This is the second episode.

The King of a neighbouring country arrives in Hong Kong for surgery. Security is tight, as the government does not want this to become general knowledge. Newman, Rod Taylor gets a tip from one of his sources that something is happening. The special envoy for Hong Kong, Frederick Worlock, has flown in from London but is taking no calls.

Taylor pays a visit to the Envoy's house and is stopped outside by a large number of heavily armed Police. Also on scene, is Taylor friend, Chief Inspector, Lloyd Bochner. Bochner is not forthcoming with any info either.

What is happening at the house is that they are setting up a surgery. The King was the victim of an assassination attempt. Being one of the West's few allies in the area, the British are anxious to save his life.

Taylor does some more digging and comes across the King's son, Rene Kroper. Taylor once more pays a visit to the envoy. Since the government does not wish the world to know about the assassination attempt, they take Taylor into their confidence. They promise Taylor an exclusive after the King recovers and has left Hong Kong.

Taylor agrees to the deal and heads back to his office. Just outside of said office, he is grabbed and bundled into a car. A sack is put over his head, and a cosh applied to the side of same. He wakes up in a warehouse somewhere. Outside the door he overhears men talking about murdering the King. One of the men has a very distinctive voice.

A short time later, Taylor has managed to remove his bonds and start a fire. When the guard enters, Taylor rocks him with a few punches and escapes. He roars back to the envoy's place with his tale. Inspector Bochner has Taylor relate the story to Worlock.

Taylor is told that the King is in surgery right at that moment. There are guards everywhere. The surgery is a success and the King is wheeled to a small room to recover. Ten minutes later the doctor, Jack Livesey, announces that the man is dead. Livesey has also discovered a small needle mark in the dead man's neck.

Bochner quickly has his Police round up all the medical personal involved in the surgery. They catch the one man, Henry Scott burying a syringe in the garden. Turns out that Scott works for a political party opposed to the King.

They also plan on killing the now, King, Rene Kroper. The counsel for the new King, Edward Colmans puts in an appearance. Taylor's eyes go wide as he recognizes Colmans' voice as the one he heard at the warehouse. Taylor pulls Bochner aside and tells him this.

Without being sure it is the man Taylor heard, there is not much they can do. Taylor has a plan to flush out the rat. Bochner and Taylor tell Colmans that they will be sending two ambulances to the airport. One with the dead King, and after it leaves, one with the new King, Kroper. "We must keep the new King safe." Colmans excuses himself and says he will meet everyone at the airport.

Bochner and Taylor then set an explosive booby trap in the second vehicle. They send off the first with both the dead man, and the King aboard. They drive the second one out ten minutes later. Sure enough, a group of armed me try to stop them. Taylor and Bochner stop, quickly exit and dash into the thick underbrush. They hit the dirt and wait. A huge explosion soon follows with the rebel types going the way of the dodo.

Colmans, waiting at the airport is arrested and handed over to the new King's justice. He is the only one who could have arranged the ambush of the second ambulance.

Also in the cast are, Jack Kruschen, Pamela Light and Alex Finlayson.

The director was longtime TV-man, Boris Sagal. Sagal meet a rather gruesome premature death when he walked into the tail rotor blade of a helicopter he just exited. He is perhaps best known as the director of the mini-series, MASADA and RICH MAN, POOR MAN.

Katy Sagal, from MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, is one of his children.
