The Wife Goes Under the Knife.

Warning: Spoilers
It's a salute to ski maintenance on Fool Time as Tim and Al show off their skis: Al's are hand-me-downs from his father who used them in the 1948 Olympics, while Tim's are overpriced, stainless steel. They send it through a ski maintenance machine, and of course, Tim sets it to high gear, sending it smashing through the set window. Palm: apply directly to your face. At home, the Taylors are excited about their big ski weekend, while Brad is excited about ski bunnies. Jill won't be going, so it really will be the vacation of their dreams. She has to finish her masters thesis, and complains about feeling bloated, menstrual cramps and other female troubles Tim doesn't want to hear while he's eating breakfast. Then Patty comes over and Jill relays her heavy flow woes to her, thus making Tim lose his breakfast, and probably his lunch too. Following Patty's advice, Jill decides to see a gynecologist, since she hadn't been in years. So the next day, while she goes for her "tune up", Tim and Marty talk about their upcoming plans: Tim's ski trip and Marty taking the girls to Barbie Expo '99. Jill calls and asks Tim to pick her up. Apparently, things didn't go too well, so, ever the dedicated husband, Tim ventures down to No Man's Land: a gynecology office waiting room filled with women. He has to sit between two fat ladies and gets to hear delightful stories about pregnancy bloating, constipation, heavy afterbirth and discharge. Well, there goes Tim's dinner and tomorrow's breakfast too. Finally, he gets to see Jill and meet with her doctor, who puts it as simply as possible: she needs a hysterectomy.

What this basically means is that Jill will be taking the early train to menopause. Naturally, she isn't looking forward to the surgery, and Tim tries to be as supportive as he can. He even breaks the news to Brad and Mark about postponing the ski trip. He attempts to explain Jill's predicament to them, first using a moose head as an example, but then moves on to the sink, a more proper analogy. Apparently the garbage disposal is stuck in the 'on' position and she's having it removed. They choose to look it up on the internet instead. Early next morning, it's off to the hospital. Tim and his wife have a small talk as she lays on the gurney, waiting to go into the O.R. She actually wishes her mother were there, and then, as she's wheeled in, Tim assures her she'll be alright and he'll be waiting right there for her when she comes out. Hours go by as a worried Tim sits outside of surgery, when suddenly, out comes a familiar face: Wilson. The hospital was short a midwife, so he was filling in. He and Tim say a prayer in a language I'm unable to identify. Meanwhile in surgery, Jill suddenly goes into shock. Stay tuned for Part II to see how it all turns out.

A perfect balance of drama and comedy. The jokes were actually pretty funny in this one, and we see such genuine concern in Tim and Jill, as well as Brad and Mark. One of their family members is in a life threatening situation and they all band together. Actors or not, these people were a real family. Of course, this episode may be difficult to watch if you're a guy, having to hear such graphic detail about menstruation, pregnancy, deliveries, all the things guys don't want to know about. But to be fair, guys do share their own bodily functions with women, so I guess it's an even trade. So, let's see if Jill pulls through and if she does, will she ever be the same?
