Decent episode. New recurring character. Richie's funny car break-in. Sweet Mac at the end.

Warning: Spoilers
Mac's old friend, Lucas Desiree, gets killed(beheaded) in a small town. A sheriff arrests a war veteran who was at the scene for the crime.

Richie was hilarious as he tries to break int a car in front of the police station. This is part of Mac's plan to find out if the arrested man, Leo, is a immortal or not, and figure out who really killed his old friend. Leo is mentally ill after being shot in the face in Vietnam. The town has small-town mentality with some rednecks not liking strangers and wanting to string-up Leo.

I would have liked to see more of the character of Lucas, he seemed wise. In Mac's flashback it's revealed that Duncan was a abolitionist, and Lucas was a confederate soldier during the civil war era.

A new character, Randi Macfarland, a reporter is introduced. She's annoying, but I think that is intentional. Randi will recur for 7 episodes and is actually in the opening credits. Tessa is left behind without much to do(lazy writing).

The episode is pretty solid. There are some racist undertones regarding the sheriff, and the rednecks, a well as in Mac's flashback. Loved when Mac told the lead redneck off in the restaurant. Mac's gesture at the end shows another reason why we like him as the lead in this series. He is sweet. I gave this a 7/10.

first and only time... Warning: Spoilers
This epi has Duncan and Tess going to see a friend of his, met over 100yr ago. Almost there something goes wrong with the car, so they get out to walk, this epi is the only one to have Mac Fall to his knees and just know his friend is dead. Heads home but takes Richie to go see the guy arrested for killing his friend. Finds out his friend was liked well enough by most and used to play chess with the sheriff before he retired and left. New sheriff, not real liked, keeps to himself and well somethings off (of course new sheriff, "bad" immortal) and the guy arrested a vet and hero and no "killer".

Press there because of headless body (Macs friend) and the 1 that was found in city before.

New sheriff "tells" the "scummy" of the town the prisoner being moved and so they go to make trouble. Richie tells press who come to view the prob, get threats, Mac gets in there tells them off, they leave taking the other disgrace to the badge and Mac and Richie take off while the press gets the city cops story.

Back home, city cop thanks them, the vet (oh ya he wonders/homeless but still a good guy) comes in to sell his purple heart, Mac says not to buy will lend against till he comes back, gives him $ and slips medal back into vets bag.

Just a nice epi with Mac and his justice, as the new sheriff was taken care of by Mac. Also the lighting on the sword handle at end was I think 1 and only time that was seen in show but was it for the friends grave or...

happy watching

Duncan goes to a stereotypical hick town.
planktonrules24 November 2021
Civil war flashback.

Immortal sheriff.

A friend of Duncan's was beheaded in a small town and he decides to investigate. The man being held for the murder isn't guilty...he was just found standing over the body and holding the sword used to kill him. But somehow the sheriff is involved in all this...and this, combined with a few unfriendly folks in town make it difficult for Duncan to get to the bottom of things. And, somehow, the key are a series of flashbacks to Duncan...when he fought in the US Civil War.

The small town is the standard stereotypical one...you know, the type who love lynchings and vigilante justice. To me, the accents and behavior all seemed a bit overdone...a bit broad. But otherwise a decent and enjoyable episode that takes the series out of the city and into a new locale.

Back to Immortal v Immortal
skteosk25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Duncan has been summoned by an old Immortal friend, Lucas Desiree, but before he can find him, Lucas is beheaded by another Immortal. The local sheriff arrests an itinerant, Leo Atkins, but it's clear to the audience, Duncan and Sergeant Powell that he's innocent. So Duncan is left both trying to kill Leo and identifying the real killer.

This episode seems to ask a lot of questions that the show will later decide are best off ignored. Powell makes the trip because the police are still looking into the death of Slan Quince in the first episode and another headless body turning up strikes a cord. This is the last we'll see of him, so apparently no-one thought anything of any of the other headless bodies over the course of the next six seasons. We also see Duncan somehow sensing Lucas' quickening from at least half a mile away, which I don't think happens again and is contradicted later.

Tessa is absent from a huge chunk of the episode again as Duncan and Richie go off to Steveston without her. We do get the debut of Randi McFarlane, who's considered important enough to be listed on the opening credits, albeit without any clips of her. She'll be back in Bad Day in Building A.

Garry Chalk, one of those Vancouver actors who seems to be in everything, pops up as a local redneck who leads a lynch mob targeting Leo. Duncan calmly taking out some of them and then facing down the rest provides a satisfying moment.

It's not really a surprise that Sheriff Crowley turns out to be our Bad Guy Immortal of the Week (who else was it going to be, one of the rednecks?) but there's still an electric moment when he and Duncan finally meet knowing exactly who the other one is and how this is going to go. Their inevitable sword fight is unfortunately rather brief, but they exchange some nice barbs along the way.

The ending is a bit strange: Leo sells Duncan his old military medal, saying it's a mistake to hold on to the past, but Duncan slips it into his backpack anyway?

The Madman, the Captain and the Highlander!!!!!!! Warning: Spoilers
The Madman, the Captain and the Highlander!!!!!!! ------- ------- ------- This fourth episode had the participation of late actor Vincent Schiavelli, selected in 1997 by the "Vanity Fair" magazine as one of the best character actors in the U.S.

It tells us the story of the friendship between Duncan and the Confederate Captain Lucas Desireé who met each other during the Civil War in the U.S. and the story in present time of Duncan trying to find Lucas'murderer after he was killed in a small town where he lived his last days. An old and somewhat crazy, but never stupid Vietnam veteran is being incriminated as Lucas' killer and it will be the work of Duncan and Richie to find the real assassin.

Thank You Old Friend And Goodbye

Warning: Spoilers
1. I liked this episode primarily because of Duncan's friendship (in flashback) with immortal Lucas Desiree. They met during the American Civil War when Duncan was a pow and was hung. Lucas waited until they buried Duncan and left the area then he dug Duncan out of his grave. The two kept in touch for more than a century. Unfortunately just before Duncan arrives to pay Lucas a visit, Lucas is beheaded by immortal sheriff Crowley. An interesting scene follows. Duncan is still a some distance from the cabin where Lucas lived and where he was killed, yet Duncan feels a shock from that quickening from that distance and it knocks him to his knees. I question why the quickening had any effect on Duncan at all since it was the sheriff who should receive all of the quickening. 2. Although immortals do not consider it against any law when one immortal kills another, Sheriff Crowley does not want anyone investigating the killing so this crooked sheriff decides to frame a homeless Vietnam vet for the murder. 3. Duncan and Richie work together and learn that the immortal sheriff is in reality the guilty party. Duncan eventually puts Sheriff Crowley out of office, permanently. 4. I liked the episode also because Tessa was looking especially fetching, and then enter blonde news reporter Randi MacFarland, another hottie who unfortunately appeared in only a handful of episodes of Highlander. I personally thought that she had more potential as a semi regular character.
