After catching up with an old college friend Ernie (William Windom.) George Howell realises that Ernie is doing well in the private sector.
When George and his wife end up in a swanky restaurant which Ernie chose. George insists he pays the bill even though he does not have enough money.
Mrs Green has a whip round and sends the money over to the restaurant to help George out.
An embarrassed George has had enough of being poor. He wants to quit teaching and take up a lucrative job offer from Ernie.
Both Mrs Green and Professor Crayton ask him to reconsider. Maybe his latest research might reignite George's zeal for academia.
Even back in the early 1960s teachers were lower paid. I can't blame George for being tempted. Maybe George should had swallowed his pride and got his friend to pick up the bill.
