Boy, this should have been a one-hour "SportsCentury," not a half-hour show because Al Davis is a fascinating subject. Someone in the episode (there were so many interviewed within a short period, it would make your head swim) admitted Davis was a real study of contrasts. There was (and presumably still is) no in-between with Davis; he's either really a good guy or the devil in disguise. He's either compassionate or nasty, generous or power hungry....on and on. Think of about every extreme adjective and it fits this football man.
Nobody has been more controversial in the National Football League than Oakland/L.A./Oakland Raiders big-shot Davis. Nobody is more hated, yet at times respected. For the most part, Davis is now a one-man battle against all the owners and powers of the NFL. He is a true rebel, like him or hate him.
This is why I thought this would have been a better program at one hour, because there is so much material here and so many people on pictured in this episode either totally supporting Davis or totally ripping him apart.
In the end, I will say this is one of the more interesting episodes I've seen a program which is good to begin with. The half-hour flies by because of all the strong statements made about Davis.
For awhile, I thought this was another SC hatchet job but overall it was about half-and-half. People who worked for Davis or played on the Raiders seem to really like him. People who tried to work with Davis, like the fellow owners and some sportswriters, seem to hate him with a passion. We here both sides here. Good show - just wish there was more.
