Episodes A Few Hearts, a Few Flowers Some Tales for Halloween I Can Hear the Ice Melting No Other Road
This one tells three concurrent stories and spends the most time on the least interesting one. Because of the lack of time for the other stories, they are too simply resolved.
Ricardo Montelban plays a famous author who is also a playboy but can't divorce his uncaring wife because he needs her money. He stages an intentionally unsuccessful suicide attempts to gain her attention and sympathy. It puts him in Blair Hospital but otherwise accomplishes nothing. Lee Kurty as nurse Zoe Lawton falls for him and he romances her to make his wife jealous, actually seeming to fall for her. Kildare is jealous and concerned. This is the dull story, although we do get a look at Nurse Lawton's garishly decorated apartment. (It appears to be an attic covered by bright red plaid wallpaper. Jeesh!)
Leslie Ann Warren, a year after she was Cinderella, plays a young pregnant wife whose husband isn't sure he wants to be a father because they are poor and can't give the baby what he'll need to make it in life. Leslie is loyal to her husband and decides she doesn't want the baby if he doesn't want it. Abortion is not yet an option, (and this would be very late term). They consider adoption.
Meanwhile Dr. Gillespie has been over-working himself and suffers a heart attack. The staff rallies to try to fill his shoes and do their jobs at the same time. Gillespie decides (A) his body is trying to tell him something and (B) since the hospital seems to be functioning without him, maybe he isn't needed.
Kildare, when not jealous over Nurse Lawton, manages to figure out a way to convince the young husband that he's capable of being a father and Gillespie that he isn't useless. Both of those stories would have been better if the entire four episodes had been able to concentrate on them. Instead they are reduced to sub-plots.
