Beatlemania meets the Alan Brady Show
Owlwise19 July 2020
Beatlemania was addressed by several sitcoms in the early 1960s. quite often with Chad & Jeremy standing in for the Fabs. This is one of the best such episodes, with Chad & Jeremy offering a very good facsimile of the Beatles' wit & charm as seen in period interviews.

What's especially likable about the episode is that they don't make fun of the musicians themselves, but draw a lot of comedy from the mania around them. And for younger viewers who might think that the sheer hysteria of the teenaged girls depicted is an exaggeration, I can assure them as someone who was a boy then, it is NOT exaggerated in the least.

It's also fun to see Rob & Laura worried about fans storming their home if it's discovered that the Redcoats are staying there ... but also just dying to tell their big secret to someone, anyone! A period piece that really doesn't seem dated because it gets everything right, capturing that moment perfectly.

British Invasion ~ TV Shows

Fun episode that captures the hysterical nature of 'Beatlemania' as well as the crazed teenagers of that time. This episode is a great time capsule of what it was like then with girls going crazy to obtain things like pillows that may have been used by their idols.

The episode shows the reality of what TV shows had to go through in providing security for these musical acts which crowds would go bonkers over. I really like part when Laura says to Rob that she just wants to tell someone that the Redcoats are staying at their house. Think of yourself if the Beatles were staying at your house, but you couldn't tell anyone.

Chad and Jeremy were great...the screaming girls...not so great.

The pop singers, Chad and Jeremy, were minor stars in the mid-1960s with a couple nice hit songs. However, in this installment of "The Dick Van Dyke Show", they play 'The Redcoats', Fred and Ernie. Why they didn't call them Chad & Jeremy perhaps is because at the time, it would have been tough to imagine teenage girls going THAT gaga over the duo.

Alan's guest on his show this week are the Redcoats. However, the duo are exhausted because everywhere they go, screaming girls chase them and maul them. Mel comes up with an idea...to hide them at Rob's house. And, once there, Rob and Laura need to keep it a secret, as otherwise what happens towards the end could happen. See it...you'll see what I mean!

Chad & Jeremy were actually pretty good and funny. I think it's because they were used sparingly...which was a smart move. It's an interesting episode...though when the screaming girls finally arrive, I wanted to spank the bunch of them as they were like a hoard of rabid wolverines!
