Matlock and the hot dogs

Warning: Spoilers
Diagnosis Murder is a spin-off of Jake and the Fatman. Jake and the Fatman was itself a spin-off of Matlock. Here Matlock (Andy Griffith) appears in this two-parter. Grampa Simpson would be excited.

The various layers and sub-plots were a bit hard to follow at times, but I liked how Mark explained to Matlock that he was able to buy his Malibu beachside house when prices were low and Malibu was a long way from anywhere.

I like Diagnosis Murder and it's a shame Michael Tucci (no relation to Stanley) was being phased out in season 4.

Watched for Matlock

Warning: Spoilers
My review is an overall review of the 2 parts. I did a rewatch recently of Diagnosis Murder and found it just ok. But I absolutely loved its predecessor, Matlock. These episodes weren't there before in the streaming service I watch, but it is now. I wouldn't say Diagnosis Murder was a spinoff as no character was spun off from Matlock. But it is by the same creators and in the same universe. So this is more like a crossover despite Matlock having ended two years prior.

I loved seeing Ben again on this. And he got a lot of screen time. He was his usual charming, cranky self. With his trademark "oh, come on." And calling a court decision a bonehead decision. And being disturbed from his sleep and waking up in disarray from his bed. I said in one of my Matlock reviews that LA is never kind to Ben. And in fact, he was thrown in jail again for contempt. Lol. I think he went to jail every time he went to LA on Matlock. Poor guy. Lol. Plus all his funny body characteristics and expressions were there.

As for the mystery, I knew who the culprit was right away. It's very similar to a Matlock episode about how the killing went down. The plot overall was interesting and a bit twisty, so that was good. I love that he was paired up a bit with Amanda. Not much paring between him and Mark tho. I was surprised by that and thought those two old guys teaming up could have made for a lot of fun. They did have good banter.

Anyway, I watched this for Matlock. He did not disappoint. He was a little more heavy-set here. They gave an explanation of why Ben loved hotdogs and was a bit of a cheapskate. But I didn't really care for that. It wasn't really needed. I wish we could have had more of Matlock, like in 2-hour movies or something. But this little 2-parter was quite nice and that makes them the best episodes for me of Diagnosis Murder. 10/10.
