THE DETECTIVES – Two Time Loser - 1959

This one is episode 9 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Two time loser Bruce Gordon is being transported to trial on his third felony rap. The man escapes and beats the feet into the city. He steals a car and heads for the city limits. Gordon though has had the bad luck to steal an automobile with low fuel. He pulls into a gas station to fuel up. The gas jockey, Ralph Moody, recognizes the escapee and puts a call through to the Police. Gordon spots the play and puts a .45 round into his back.

Detectives Lee Farr and Russell Thorson are soon on the case. All the roads etc out of the city are covered. The Police assume that Gordon has gone to ground, but where? They check out his old haunts and come up with a possible hideout Gordon might try for. A woman Gordon used to see back in the past, Claire Carlton, seems the likely spot to stake out. Sure enough, Gordon appears and heads for Carleton's rooms. Inside waiting, is a half dozen cops with drawn weapons.

The plan however goes amiss when a passing off duty cop spots Gordon on the street, and goes for him. This results in shots being fired and Gordon beating the feet into a local school. He grabs the school cleaning woman as a hostage. "Back off or I kill her!" Gordon shouts.

Captain of Detectives Robert Taylor now shows and the Police must decide on how to save the hostage. Needless to say, a plan is hatched and the woman is retrieved unhurt. Gordon is cuffed for a date with the judge. With the new charges, it is death row beef for the swine.

Two-Time Loser

Kirk is in a hurry and evading the police. When he pulls up at the gas station he just wants his car filled up with gas and leave quickly.

Only for the gas attendant to recognise him and he phones for the police.

Kirk shoots him dead but he gets bit by the gas attendant's dog.

Later Kirk holds a hostage when he is surrounded by the police. There is a standoff but Kirk is not feeling too well.

Can he trust the police when informed that the dog had rabies? Kirk needs urgent medical treatment on his way to a death sentence.

Pop the gas attendant would still be alive if he could talk quickly on the phone. No wonder his mutt was frothing at the mouth.

I did like how an enthusiastic beat cop inadvertently scared Kirk off.

The best bit was Kirk's moll talking to the police what it is like to wait for your man to come back to you while getting older.
