The 'Stranger' in this episode's title is a young bloke named 'Peter' who strolls
into the area and the women's hearts, everyone of them that crosses his path seems instantly smitten or entranced by him. From Marriette and Ma Larkin who would far rather, take notice of him than their other halves. Such that Charlie's new notions for a business venture, can not possibly compare to the sight of bloke engaged in manual labour.
'Peter' is an amiable lad who appears more than capable at turning his hands at virtually anything that he sets out todo, and he seems content to accept any methods of payment from petty cash to vegetables.
So much so that the local populace have absolutely no qualms whatsoever, in taking full advantage of his skills, capabilities and generosity of spirit.
Darling Buds of May is set in the 1950's not that many years after the Second World War, and the attitudes and opinions of many people in the locality, have changed very little from the war years.
