Violation is a chilling episode because a teenager, who carrying false ID, is arrested and sent to a violent prison where he is raped. Cagney and Lacey investigate this crime and thankfully manage to find the culprit after a false lead from the rapist himself. In this episode the Police Department is sued by the teenager's father for negligence based on Cagney's verbal apology on behalf of the Police Department, and this results in their leave being cancelled by their supervisor.
