While slight on plot, the ending came as a bit of a shock.

This episode of Cadfael is a bit different from the norm. While there is a body and a crime to solve, so much of the show consists of Cadfael and others searching through the winter snows for people who might have been killed by a gang of brigands who are terrorizing the countryside. However, well into this search a few horrible discoveries are made among the many victims of these marauders. First, Cadfael's assistant, Oswin, is found nearly dead. He's delirious and what exactly happened with him in uncertain--but naturally, Brother Jerome behaves like a judgmental idiot (what else is new there?). A bit later, a naked dead woman is discovered in the ice. When the ice is thawed, they discover she's a missing nun (poorly named 'Hilaria')--a nun who has been raped and murdered. Could Oswin be responsible for this? If you ask Jerome, the answer is of course! Can Cadfael tease out exactly what occurred?

For the most part, this is a decent but not especially great episode. However, near the very end comes a HUGE shocker--HUGE. You learn some secret about Cadfael and his life during the Crusade....and it comes to bite him back after all these years. I can say not more--just watch this one for yourself and you'll know what I mean. Well worth seeing and, as usual, impeccably made and written.

a delight to watch

Cadfael is always good value, but this episode is a delight. Brother Cadfael's novice is found injured and a young nun in his company, and two orphan children, missing. The nun is discovered dead, and the novice is the prime suspect. There is a twist in the identity of a wandering visitor from the East, and a surprise for Cadfael.

The special effects are up to the highest standards in the series, and the writing is good and the emotion raw and poignant. One feels for Cadfael and the others in this episode in a way which one might not have done in other episodes. One or two details of the story might not be entirely realistic from an historical perspective, but the atmosphere is wonderfully evocative.

"Between friends, there is no owing."

Once again there is a mystery with many threads overlapping. Father Cadfael uses intuition and a great deal of forensics to sort out what happened.

You guessed it; Sister Hilaria is found in the ice and the last time she was seen was with Brother Oswain of who is delirious from an encounter with bandits. Two kids are missing, and a mysterious woodsman (with a sword) is creeping around. Things only get more complicated. In the process of sorting this out, Father Cadfael leaves words of wisdom as "There is no shame in tears when they are worth shedding."

The identity of the mysterious woodsman holds great significance.

Warning: Spoilers
Brother Oswin is attacked by some bandits late at night. He manages to get to the Abbey in a severely injured state.

However the death of a nun that Oswin had met, makes him a suspect.

Brother Jerome is convinced that Oswin violated her and then killed her.

The nun was accompanying two children who were rescued by soldier who lives in the forest.

It looks obvious that the bandits might had killed the nun, however Cadfael comes to a different conclusion and just in the nick of time for Oswin.

There is another revelation at the end of the episode. The soldier doing the good deeds is a child of a Syrian Muslim mother and a crusader knight who he never met. It turns out that Cadfael spawned a son in the holy lands.

This episode was shown as a Christmas special and it certainly has a snowbound setting. The nun's body is found in a frozen river and Brother Oswin might had succumbed to temptation.

Giving Cadfael a son is another attempt to give him layered character. It seems Cadfael's son has inherited his kindness and fighting skills.
