An interesting story about what cattlemen faced.
kfo949419 August 2014
The cattlemen in the area go to the regular salt mine to make sure that their cattle will survive the dry conditions. Animals such as cattle need salt to survive so this is an important element in their survival. But the area salt has been mined out and the only salt is owned by Ada Halle and she is using economics 101 'supply and demand' to get the price that she wants. And the area cattlemen, including Ben Cartwright, are fighting for what salt is left.

While the cattlemen know that there is limited salt they are willing to share. But one man, Sid Talbott, wants to bribe Ada into giving him all the salt leaving the other herds to die, thus he will be able to demand any price when he sales the cattle for slaughter. But things take a turn for the worse when Ada sees even more dollar signs in front of her eyes.

An interested tale into what cattlemen faced in the rural west. The acting was top notch and the salt story interesting. The writer did try to start a sub-plot with Ada having a relationship with the local sheriff but that seemed more like a time killer than an interesting part of the story. But overall this was an entertaining show.

A necessary component of the diet
bkoganbing22 June 2018
Guest star Kim Hunter gives a nicely controlled performance of a woman who owns the largest quantity of salt around. For the cattlemen including the Cartwright family salt is a necessary component of the diet of their herds as it is for humans.

Lorne Greene. Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, and David Canary are all in from the Ponderosa looking to buy as are a lot of other ranchers. Hunter is having her fiance Sheriff James Best do her business dickering and due to the limited supply the ranchers including the Cartwrights are all taking lesser amounts.

That is until John Doucette arrives who is a dark version of Ben Cartwright and his appealing to Hunter's greed sets in motion a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

Interesting that this kind of a western story usually involves water rights. Still it pushes the ranchers to forget the law and start using six guns. Doucette turns in a fine performance of a real snake of a human being.

One of the best post Pernell Roberts Bonanza stories.

Yet another self righteous female from "back east"
Thomas0015 October 2017
What a continuous streak of these unfortunate Bonanza shows!!! Yet another young female, former teacher from "back east", another oppressed, underpaid and overworked, again new in the west and again imposing her ways on ranchers in Nevada. More men get shot and that teacher .... well, she sheds elephant tears, again. In previous shows with this agenda, the "teachers" were at least pleasant to look at, this one looks like a congressperson from California.
