I love the pilot episode, thank goodness it was picked up to be a full line series. Considering it was a one off episode the cast gel together incredibly well, you'd swear they'd worked together for years. Each character is so easy in their roles, Mr Humphreys is as camp as Christmas, Mr Lucas is the store clown, Mr Grainger is stern and grumpy. Mrs Slocombe is a mix of crabby and bossy. Far from the funniest episode of AYBS but it did have some funny moments, mainly focused around Mr Lucas. I read that Mr Lucas was originally deemed the lead, and the goings on were largely to be centred around him, I think it would have been a quick realisation as production went on that Mr Humphreys was comedy gold. How lucky we were that they saw potential in this pilot and brought us years of comedy gold. Having started off as a 17 year old in a high class independent department store I have an even higher fondness for it, I was even taught how to flute a handkerchief, you never forget. Way ahead of its time, ohh the treasures that lay ahead, a joy.

This was the pilot episode of Are You Being Served and it does look a little rough around the edges.

The staff of Grace Brothers are going through an reorganisation and there are teething troubles.

The Women's department will now share space with the Mens.

It brings Mrs Slocombe into conflict with Mr Grainger. It is left to Captain Peacock to keep the peace.

There is already a good chemistry between the team here. It is an ensemble comedy.

When the series started properly, Mr Humphreys really did become a fan favourite with his camp behaviour and catchphrases. Here you get a hint of it as Mr Lucas finds a pass for an adult cinema.

Some of the cheekiness comes from Mr Lucas, who has only recently started.
