Andy, the practically perfect father...
planktonrules24 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is an episode that demonstrates what a marvelous TV father Andy Taylor was. I sure wish I could be this wise! Opie hopes to get a nice gift for his father and hopes to use his prodigious shooting skills to win an electric shaver. However, inexplicably, Opie loses again and again despite his skills. Later, when Andy learns what has happened, he visits the traveling carnival where Opie lost his savings and quickly spots a variety of ways the two sharp carnies are cheating. So, understanding how they've manipulated the gun sights, he quickly cleans up--winning game after game. Instead of then arresting them, he convinces them to give Opie a fair chance the next time he returns--after all, he does not want to bail out Opie--just give him a fair shake. And, if they don't, there's the implication that very bad things will likely occur!

Andy plays an incredibly wise father and manages to help his son without Opie even realizing it--so Opie won't expect his father to always be there to fight his battles. This is wise, indeed. And, as for Opie, as usual, he demonstrates that he's a child with great character. A warm and satisfying episode--even if it isn't meant to be a funny one.

Trite Little Episode
Hitchcoc18 December 2019
We can all relate to crooked carnival games. Those who wanted so badly to gamble would head off to the fairgrounds and get fleeced by these guys. Here a couple shooting gallery fellows are manipulating the public by misadjusting the sights on the guns. Opie gets in the middle because he wants to buy a nice gift for his dad.

Nice Glimpse into an Earlier Time

Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning dialogue about birthday presents that kids give their parents, to the study in corruption at (some) county fairs, this episode is very entertaining, and one to be preserved as a remembrance of the way families used to teach life's lessons to the young uns.

Don't overlook Aunt Bee's wonderful interactions with Opie in his needing guidance in how to find the right gift for his dad. How can people say there wasn't real warmth from Frances Bavier in that TV family?

I found great satisfaction when Andy figures out the scam the shooting gallery operators are running and calls them on it.

This is a great episode.

1st episode without Don Knotts as a regular is pretty good.

Without Don Knotts brilliant comedy, there'll be more emphasis on the story. As Ron Howard gets older he'll be more active in the humor.. George Lindsay had some funny moments in this episode. Lliked the "anything wrong with my eyes Helen, you're a teacher" line. Lewis Charles and Billy Halop were well cast as the shady carnival workers. Not a lot of big laughs other than Goober. But, a good story.
