For a writer whose specialty was his mad rush of words — careening, excessive, gloriously offensive and thoroughly “gonzo,” to use a word he may well have coined — Hunter S. Thompson has long been an irresistible image to put on screen. He was played by Johnny Depp in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” Bill Murray in “Where the Buffalo Roam” and a few others, and now it’s Willem Dafoe’s turn in Patricia Arquette’s directorial debut, “Gonzo Girl.”
Rather, it’s Dafoe’s turn to play somebody like Hunter S. Thompson. In the movie, which had its world premiere on Thursday night as one of the opening-night attractions of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Dafoe is “Walker Reade,” a wild-eyed journalist and author who lives in Woody Creek, Colorado and loves guns, drugs, alcohol and messing with people — not necessarily in that order. It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. But there are others including two exceptional directorial debuts from celebrated veteran stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Patricia Arquette making it all a very memorable kickoff for TIFF on many fronts.
In fact this is a festival this year featuring numerous premieres of films either marking the first time an actor has gone behind the camera as Thomas and Arquette have done, respectively, with Special Presentation North Star, and the Discovery Section opener Gonzo Girl, or taking their latest shot as a director. In the coming days we will also have Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour; Viggo Mortensen’s sophomore feature The Dead Don’t Hurt; Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat; Chris Pine...

While it was difficult for the world to discern at the time, and maybe even now, to the legendary, notorious absurdist comedian Andy Kaufman, comedy was an art, and the act of performance was an act worth living in beyond the stage. Infamous for his strange, bizarre comedic behavior and erratic and provocative, even goading, live appearances, Kaufman, the subject of the documentary “Thank You Very Much: Andy Kaufman,” was seemingly on a quest for truth.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

Vice Media Group, the swashbuckling, youth-skewing digital media brand, is preparing to file for bankruptcy.
The company, which was valued at $5.7 billion in 2017, is considering the move after struggling to find a buyer, according to reports.
It comes after a tumultuous start to the year for the company, which saw Nancy Dubuc exit after five years, replaced by Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala, as well as the departure of Global President of News & Entertainment Jesse Angelo to launch his own production company.
Last week, the company underwent the latest in a series of layoffs, streamlining its news division and canceling its signature show in Vice News Tonight.
“Vice Media Group has been engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of strategic alternatives and planning,” Vice said in a statement to the New York Times, which broke the news. “The company, its board and stakeholders continue to be focused on finding the best path for the company.

They say “sex sells” in Hollywood, right? But what about drugs? After all, once the production code was lifted, successful counterculture drug movies like Easy Rider gave way to the indie auteur movement in American cinema in the 1960s and 70s, where Hollywood renegades like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese picked up the mantle and went on to make all-time classics like Scarface and Goodfellas decades later. In the interim, there has been no shortage of critical and commercial drug movie successes, be they Blow, Sicario, Traffic, The Wolf of Wall Street, you name it.

With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.
Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:
Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

Go Matsuo, apart from a filmmaker, is also an illustrator and motion graphics artist, which explains a bit on why he chose to base one of his films in the rather illustrative concept of the graffiti, in a 30-minute short that won a number of awards in local festivals, including Kyoto and Yamagata.

Thus, a battle between these two unlikely foes begins, which leads, though, to completely unexpected paths, while eventually helping them face their own issues, as Yuzo is not sure what to do with her future, while Gonzo is retaining a shop in a neighborhood that is dying,...

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

"Cooking and performing is a hazard." IFC Midnght has unveiled the main trailer for Flux Gourmet, a wacky indie horror dark comedy about a "food collective", made by the director of Berberian Sound Studio - Peter Strickland. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year to rather mixed reviews - you'll see why from this trailer. Set at an institute devoted to culinary + alimentary performance, an art collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders. It stars Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, Richard Bremmer. I appreciate the PR description for this one that calls it an "Intoxicating Gonzo Delicacy" - ha! That actually gets my attention. But the rest of this looks so dumb. Just not my cup of tea at all, it's literal artsy-fartsy cinema slop. However, if you like Strickland's films - you do not want to miss this.

Director Kirk Thatcher has worked with the Muppets for decades and, in all that time, he’d been hoping to help orchestrate a Halloween special. Following the success of last year’s short-form Disney+ series “Muppets Now,” Thatcher is getting his wish with the new “Muppets Haunted Mansion.” The 40-minute special sees the Great Gonzo, along with his friend Pepe the Prawn, visit the titular Haunted Mansion in the hopes of spending the night. Little does the pair know about the 999 happy haunts that live there — and those haunts’ desire to make Gonzo No. 1,000.
“There are three things that affected me growing up: Ray Harryhausen movies, Disneyland — particularly the Haunted Mansion, the Tiki Room, and Pirates of the Caribbean — and obviously the Muppets,” Thatcher, who’s worked with the Muppets for 35 years, told IndieWire. Unofficially, you could also include Halloween. Thatcher said he remembers being a small child humming the...

The new Starz documentary series Confronting a Serial Killer is captivating, immersive and infuriating. One of the first things we learn is how victims are parsed through the criminal justice system. On the scale of homicide priorities, “pretty white college students are the most dead, black hookers are the least dead.”
Because it tells a story about an under-represented and largely dismissed cross-section of the community, Confronting a Serial Killer focuses on the victims. Even the journalist spearheading the investigation is a survivor. Putting a human face and voice to statistics is a slowly growing trend in true crime coverage. It was recently done in Peacock Originals’ John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. But the Killer Clown is one of the most recognizable names in the history of homicide. While Samuel Little may have racked up a higher body count, his is a lesser-known name.
Little extinguished 93 lives over four decades.

The trailer has been released for Chasing Asylum, a new documentary from Academy Award Australian Eva Orner.
Orner produced Alex Gibney's Taxi to the Dark Side, which won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Chasing Asylum goes inside offshore detention centres, and is billed as "the film the Australian government doesn't want you to see", presenting the personal stories of detainees sent to live indefinitely on Manus Island and Nauru.

Creed continues to be a box office success and a favorite with audiences and critics. Globally Ryan Coogler’s film has passed the $100 million mark since its initial opening this fall.
The film reunites Coogler with his Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and explores a new chapter in the Rocky story, starring Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.
For the director, there was no question that Creed would be set in Philadelphia, where it all began. And for the filmmakers, there was no doubt that principal photography would be accomplished there as well. In order to bridge the two films artistically, Coogler brought together the talented creative team of costume designers Emma Potter (“Song One”) and Antoinette Messam (“Orphan”) and his “Fruitvale Station” team: editors Michael P. Shawver and Claudia Castello; production designer Hannah Beachler; and composer Ludwig Goransson.

Pop quiz. When was the last time that Alex Gibney did not bring a film to the annual snowflake friendly fest? Even in years where he hasn’t presented a film, it feels as if he has been a mainstay bringing docu items such as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Magic Trip and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks. Mentions of the project date back to 2012 and knowing Gibney’s breakneck work ethic, Finding Fela! is probably the next after his Lance Armstrong portrait. Since Park City’s Main Street music events are sometimes directly tied to a music-docu quota, this would certainly be a must have for the fest.

You know… The only person that can actually start to let people understand what the true narrative is, is me. And you should know that better than anybody else to the get into the… the real nature and the real detail of the story. Because we haven’t heard it yet is the truth.”

It is no overstatement to describe documentary-maker Alex Gibney as one of the pre-eminent filmmakers in America, a blotless 30-year career has seen him accumulate a back catalogue striking not only for the consistently outstanding quality of his work, but also for the boldness and incisiveness of his subject matter. Highlights include “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” “Taxi to the Dark Side” (which won him an Oscar) and “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson,” and we await his upcoming “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” and his forthcoming documentary on legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, “Finding Fela!” Thus, it is with no little excitement that we greet the announcement of his next subject, one Frank Sinatra. The newly formed Alcon Television Group, the television division of Alcon Entertainment, and Frank Sinatra Enterprises are collaborating to produce an as yet untitled documentary about the...

Alex Gibney is easily one of the finest documentary filmmakers we have. From his exploration of torture practices in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay in the Oscar winning Taxi To The Dark Side to the in-depth look at one of the greatest writers to ever live in Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the filmmaker has explored stories of all different shapes and sizes, and provided an interesting and engaging look into each and every one of them. And with his latest he explores one of the most notorious figures to emerge in the last few years: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. As seen above, Apple has debuted the first trailer for We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, which takes an in-depth look at how the Australian journalist shocked the world by giving the public access to some of the government's most top secret files. Johnny Depp's connection to legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson isn't exactly a secret. In addition to starring in two films based on the writer's works - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary - the actor also served as a narrator for the Alex Gibney documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, wrote the introduction for the oral biography "Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson," and financed the extravagant funeral that was held following the writer's suicide in 2005. But soon Depp's ties to the world of Thompson will grow even deeper as Sony Pictures Classics has announced they have acquired the rights to the new documentary For No Good Reason, which features the Academy Award nominated actor observing the work of the writer's equally legendary illustrator Ralph Steadman. Directed by Charlie Paul, the new documentary was made over the course of...

No stranger to the Sundance Film Festival, over the recent years, Alex Gibney has premiered Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (Sundance ’05), Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (Sundance ’08), and Casino Jack and the United States of Money (Sundance ’10). Currently on tap, Gibney has four projects - Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream, Finding Fela!, an untitled WikiLeaks Doc, and is producing an untitled Eagles Project (visit his site), but we think the one docu (recently updated by IndieWIRE’s Anne Thompson to be in the final stages of completion) that we might see next is Lance Armstrong: The Road Back, which is currently in need of a new title and perhaps a different climax than the one that was originally anticipated.

Johnny Depp, the actor whose quirky roles have many calling him a one-trick pony, is delving into a new artistic realm: book publishing. He'll be launching Infinitum Nihil ("Nothing is forever"), a new imprint of HarperCollins, early next year.
As the edgy name implies, Infinitum Nihil aims to be "authentic, outspoken, and visionary." So far, the forthcoming titles seem to fit the bill. In January, the imprint will publish folk singer Woody Guthrie's 1947 novel, House of Earth. The musician never actually sought publication for his book about economic disputes between ordinary Texans and the upper crust of the state's panhandle.
In 2015, Infinitum Nihil will release another exciting title - The Unraveled Tales of Bob Dylan by Douglas Brinkley, a historian Depp worked with on the liner notes for a documentary called Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.

Alex Gibney has directed some of the most acclaimed documentaries of the last decade - among them Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, and Taxi to the Dark Side, which won him an Academy Award. An incredibly prolific documentarian, Gibney now turns his attention to Magic Trip, a collaboration with Alison Ellwood, his editor on Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Here Ellwood handles editing, producing and co-writing duties while Stanley Tucci provides his professional cadence as the narrator/interviewer. Magic Trip covers a 1964 roadtrip undertaken by Ken Kesey, best known as the author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Joining Kesey are an group of recreational drug users (and much more) who would soon be called the Merry Pranksters. Neal Cassady, Kerouac's inspiration for Dean Moriarty,...

When Johnny Depp isn't playing Captain Jack Sparrow or working with director Tim Burton, the actor sometimes appears in something associated with late author and friend Hunter S. Thompson. So far, he's acted in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, narrated the posthumous documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and now he's starring in and producing The Rum Diary, based on Thompson's 1961 novel that wasn't published until 1998.
The movie stars Depp as American journalist Paul Kemp, who travels to Puerto Rico to write for the San Juan Star in the 1960s and soon becomes obsessed with the fiancée (Amber Heard) of a wealthy businessman (Aaron Eckhart) who is interested in turning the island into a capitalist paradise.

Now, another one sheet has debuted at iTunes Movie Trailers and it seems to feature the best of both worlds. Reprising his role as a Hunter S. Thompson alter-ego, Depp plays New York journalist Paul Kemp, who travels down to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work at the local paper. Previously, Depp played Thompson in Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and was the narrator for Alex Gibney's doc Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson . The Rum Diary poster has arrived and judging by its composition, the underlying fuel behind the story is visibly rum. Johnny Depp starring in a film with rum at its center and it’s not based around pirating?
Movie Fanatic recently debuted The Rum Diaries trailer and the response was immense. Audiences are eager to witness Depp back in a role crafted from the mind of Hunter S. Thompson. The actor previously headlined Terry Gilliam’s page to screen adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. And some have said that Depp was channeling a bit of Thompson in his performance in Rango.
In the film that debuts October 28, Depp is a writer, Paul Kemp, who ventures to Puerto Rico for a position at a newspaper. He is joined by a stellar cast including Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, Giovani Ribisi, Aaron Eckhart and Amber Heard.

The first trailer for FilmDistrict’s The Rum Diary shows Johnny Depp doing what he does best, which is being Johnny Depp, but in a totally unique and creative way. Depp once again tackles the work of Hunter S. Thompson, and, as usual, it looks like he delivers a great performance.
Johnny Depp has been in the world of Thompson before, as the author himself in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and as the narrator for Alex Gibney’s documentary, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.
This time around, Depp plays Paul Kemp, a New York journalist that travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work at the local paper. Kemp might be drowning in woman and booze, but he still knows a good story when he finds one.

The saying goes that most documentary magic happens in the editing room. That’s an understatement for Magic Trip: Ken Kesey’s Search for a Kool Place, a found footage documentary assembled by Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood.
Magic Trip takes us back to the cross-country road trip taken by Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters in their psychedelically painted bus, interchangeably called “Further” or “Furthur.” The trip was immortalized in Tom Wolfe’s pioneering work of New Journalism, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
Fresh off the success of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey took the book’s proceeds to buy a bunch of film and audio equipment with which to film the Pranksters’ road trip to New York’s World Fair. For various reasons—not the least of which was their drug-induced state—that film never happened.

Best known for his forward, concise, and unyielding documentaries attacking big business, the government, and the media, filmmaker Alex Gibney takes a brief sabbatical from the "heavy issues" and partners up with frequent editing partner Alison Ellwood for the Ken Kesey LSD-extravaganza "Magic Trip." The two cobble together footage and audio recordings from a free-wheelin' cross-country jaunt to the World's Fair in New York lead by the "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" scribe, the end result feeling something like a cross between Gibney's own "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. With twenty-seven editions of the film festival thus far, "Sundance" is old enough to have graduated college and worked for a year (or five). Like most at that age, the program is in the throes of deciding how it's defined, and looking for more meaningful relationships with its audience. During the early years, when festivals weren't in every town, just getting into Sundance meant you'd work again, and winning meant a career. However, in recent years, Sundance has not been the promiscuous program it once was, and has failed to imbue its filmgoers with a sense of cinematic danger. In 2009 and 2010, programmers attempted to herald a Sundance that was returning to those roots, and they tried welcoming back the 'rebel' spirit, but it is the curious lack of hype surrounding Park City's 2011 program that looks likely to deliver something significant. With "be there" as its new slogan, the fest's leadership surprisingly promises…...
