Alexander Skarsgard of Succession, The Legend of Tarzan, and The Northman is set to star in the ten-episode sci-fi series Murderbot, which has just been picked up by Apple TV+. Despite sharing a title with a recently released movie from Full Moon and director Jim Wynorski, this project is actually based on Martha Wells’ bestselling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries.
The sibling duo of Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) are writing, directing, and executive producing Murderbot under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano is also executive producing for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Wells is on board as consulting producer.

Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

The invigorating success of both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin’s television and film careers over the last few years cannot be overstated. About a decade ago both legends found themselves in a position to move back to the top of the call sheet. This mutual resurgence hit an inflection point with the Netflix show Grace & Frankie, an incredibly successful sitcom that finished with its seventh season only last year.
The duo pair up again in the Paul Weitz tragi-comedy Moving On. The picture opens at the wake of an old friend of both Claire (Fonda) and Evelyn (Tomlin). Minutes after her arrival, a quiet Claire informs her dead friend’s widow Howard (Malcolm McDowell) that she plans to kill him. We gather he committed some unnamed atrocity on her many years before. In due time the movie will reveal how terrible it was and what she plans to do about it.

"So we're both lousy friends." Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an under-90-minutes dark comedy titled Moving On, the latest from filmmaker Paul Weitz. This actually premiered at TIFF 2022 last year, and recently played at the Palm Springs Film Festival, with a theatrical release set for March coming up next month. Two old friends reconnect at a funeral and decide to revenge on the widower who messed with them decades before. Along the way, each woman learns to make peace with the past and with each other. Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin star as the two old friends, along with Malcolm McDowell, Richard Roundtree, Catherine Dent, and Marcel Nahapetian. This does look like it has some funny scenes and sharp dialogue, though the rest of the cliched story doesn't seem that great. Still will be worth watching just for Fonda and Tomlin. // Continue Reading ›››...

Can you imagine anything more delightful than Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin co-starring in a movie with Richard Roundtree and Malcolm McDowell … in 1972? That was the year Fonda won an Oscar for “Klute” and daffy “Laugh-In” star Tomlin released her first comedy album. The two men were riding high with “Shaft” and “A Clockwork Orange,” respectively. Just think what an ensemble film that played to each of their strengths might have yielded 50 years ago.
That’s wishful thinking, of course. You can’t go back, and you can’t do things over, but it’s never too late to move on. At least, that’s the message writer-director Paul Weitz is peddling in “Moving On,” a sassy feature-length sitcom with a #MeToo twist in which two estranged friends reunite to settle a decades-old score.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021. Highlights include:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (October): Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning series returns for its 11th season in October and will tackle the coronavirus pandemic in a way that feels organic to the show and its protagonist. “We figured out a way that we are definitely living in a reality where the pandemic has happened,...

This review contains spoilers for What If…? episode 1.
What If…? is the latest Marvel Studios small screen project to arrive on Disney+ after much fanfare. The animated anthology show, created by Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia writer A.C. Bradley and Marvel storyboard vet Bryan Andrews, aims to explore alternate timelines in the MCU multiverse. In order to fully grasp the basic premise of What If…? as a whole it helps to have watched Marvel’s Loki, which recently introduced the multiverse to the MCU.
What If…? episode 1, “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?,” focuses on a (mainly) WWII-era version of Peggy Carter who made a key alternate choice that affected the creation of Captain America in a major way.
It’s a fun episode! Your mileage may vary depending on how much you love Peggy Carter, but since I love her a whole lot I had a good time watching this.

We’re used to The Simpsons turning out to accurately predict the future, but Disney’s classic animated movies aren’t usually known for their precognitive abilities. That said, Mouse House fans have just realized that the current coronavirus outbreak was eerily foreshadowed by an unlikely source: 2010’s Tangled.
Although the family fantasy tale about a princess with magical hair and co-starring a mid-Chuck, pre-Shazam! Zachary Levi might seem pretty far removed from the current global lockdown, when you look at it in a certain way, it’s surprisingly life-like. I’ll let the tweet below explain it:

Music Makes the People Come Together: Weitz Hits False Notes in Hostage Drama
If ever an aria could conjure the essence of camp, it would sound something like what’s on hand with Bel Canto, the latest film from Paul Weitz, adapting from Ann Patchett’s 2001 novel, a fictionalization of the 1996 Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Lima, Peru. Time to Time: Moverman’s Austere Portrait of Homelessness
There’s a deliberate soul-crushing methodology to Oren Moverman’s third feature Time Out of Mind (taking its title from a Bob Dylan album) more in line with his loosely defined sophomore effort Rampart in its freewheeling psychological portrait of man on the state of decline. Or, perhaps this time around, it’s more the apathetic inclination of the effort required to rejoin society’s expectations after a significant period of stagnation, though this hardly seems Moverman displaying optimism.
Relayed with a visual arrangement akin to viewing the world if sifting through shards of shattered glass, it’s a somber, painstaking effort centered intriguingly by Richard Gere in one of the least showy performances of his career. Strikingly neorealistic despite the familiar faces, Moverman proves, once again, to be a wholly idiosyncratic indie filmmaker who grows more and not less intriguing with each of his offerings.

Chicago – Actor Sam Eliott will make you smile. The distinctive voice, his famous mustache and his character presence in a film or TV show increases any potential in the production. He recently was in Chicago with director Paul Weitz, as they teamed up in the film “Grandma,” starring the incomparable Lily Tomlin.
“Grandma” has a very unique premise. Tomlin is the title character of Elle, who is visited by her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner). The girl is seeking an abortion, and her feminist poet grandmother seems like the right fellow traveler on her way to the procedure. Sam Elliott portrays Karl, Elle’s ex-husband – she left him for a same sex partner – who harbors a resentment toward circumstances in their relationship. The two meet along the way to the clinic, and the resentment boils to the surface.

Citizen Lily: Weitz’s Character Study Homage to Iconic Lead
Since beginning his directorial career with 1999’s American Pie, Paul Weitz has hovered in an in-between realm of either studio courting mixed or the main stream indie realm, sometimes reaching success, such as with 2002’s About a Boy, but generally languishing in tepid waters with fare like Being Flynn and Admission. He reunites with actress Lily Tomlin, who had a throwaway supporting role in his last feature for Grandma, which superficially contends to be more of the same lackluster output. Fortunately, it becomes quickly apparent that this is definitely Weitz’s strongest work in well over a decade, and gives Tomlin her best material outside of all those delectable Robert Altman titles that are peppered throughout her filmography. A character study that also serves as a familial drama and a topical issue film, its strengths aren’t apparent in every sequence,...

After his breakout performance opposite Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Paul Dano could have drunk the Hollywood Kool-Aid (or the milk shake for that matter) and suited up for the next studio tentpole. Instead, he largely opted for little-seen indies like Being Flynn and The Good Heart, with some sinister supporting roles in 12 Years a Slave and Prisoners mixed in. But with his latest film, Bill Pohlad’s Beach Boys biopic Love & Mercy, Dano finally picked a starring role that all of young Hollywood was chasing: that of tortured music icon Brian Wilson. The 30-

After Christian Bale exited Danny Boyle’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, many believed the project to have lost its driving element. Bale’s resemblance to the Apple founder is perhaps greater than the man who would actually go on to play him; Michael Fassbender. Regardless, in this first leaked poster it appears as if Fassbender is right at home in the shoes of the technological pioneer.
The poster is a replica of the original promotional ad for Jobs’ NeXT computer. In the snap, Fassbender occupies the same space that Jobs did during that round of marketing and while he doesn’t look remotely like the man, this is a movie. Disbelief has to be suspended just a little.

Fresh off Michael Mann’s cybernetic hacking thriller Blackhat, John Oritz has boarded Danny Boyle’s upcoming Steve Jobs in a supporting role.

Firmly ensconced in the middle of the annual awards season, the choice of a fall release is a deliberate manoeuvre by Universal to ensure those Academy eyes are on the biopic. Boasting a heavy-hitter cast headlined by Michael Fassbender as the titular CEO, Seth Rogen as his right-hand man Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet as Apple marketer Joanna Hoffman, and Jeff Daniels as ex-Apple CEO John Sculley, it’s shaping up to be a serious contender in all major categories.

It hasn’t been the easiest of journeys for Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film — what with David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and even Sony itself bailing on the project during its nascent stages — but now that the project has found a new home at Universal Studios, the wheels have ached into motion.
With filming now underway in San Francisco, fans have flocked to catch a glimpse of Michael Fassbender as the late, great Apple co-founder, resulting in some pretty low-res images making their way online. However, perhaps in a bid to showcase the once-troubled film in its best light, Universal has unveiled an image from the Californian set.
Showcasing Fassbender opposite Seth Rogen’s Steve Wozniak, the still appears to be taken during an earlier stage in Jobs’ defining career. From what we understand, the structure of Danny Boyle’s don’t-call-me-a-biopic will explore the creator’s life...

Just yesterday, Universal unveiled a flurry of details relating to Danny Boyle’s upcoming Steve Jobs film, including a comprehensive cast list that was topped off by X-Men Days of Future Past star Michael Fassbender as the Apple co-founder.
With filming now underway in San Francisco, eager fans have stalked the production to get a glance of the actors in character, and this has resulted in some blurry, out-of-focus images weaving their way online. Chief among them is a long distance shot of Fassbender as Jobs in what appears to be a small restaurant. You can check out the image below, but fair warning, you’ll be straining your peepers to get a clear view.
What we do know for certain is the Boyle’s visualization of Jobs’ life will take inspiration from Walter Isaacson’s biography, with film being structured around three major Apple product launches culminating in the...

The first images from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson's next movie, Inherent Vice have been revealed online.
The pictures - first published by the New York Times and Rolling Stone - give a first look at rising actress Katherine Waterston and lead Joaquin Phoenix in Anderson's first feature since 2012's Oscar nominated The Master.
Inherent Vice, adapted from the Thomas Pynchon book of the same name, represents the first major role for 34-year-old Waterston, who has had prior roles in Boardwalk Empire, Michael Clayton and Being Flynn. She finds herself working opposite Phoenix, who previously worked with the director on The Master, for which he received an Oscar nomination.
Speaking about the movie, the actress said: "This whole film is sort of the smoke clearing after the '60s and everyone coming to, wondering what the hell happened.
"There's a lot of uncertainty on every page of the novel.

It’s remarkable that in a genre expressly designed to scare people, so few of its entries actually accomplish that goal. But The Conjuring absolutely does. Smarter and more consistent than all of the Paranormal Activity films put together, James Wan’s interim project between Insidious installments exudes both studio respectability and grindhouse urgency.
All of which is why hyperbole aside, The Conjuring is the closest thing to a horror classic modern audiences are likely to get, particularly in an era when genre offerings seem to be at their most disposable.
Ron Livingston (Dinner For Schmucks) and Lily Taylor (Being Flynn) play Roger and Carolyn Perron, parents of a quartet of girls who move into a Rhode Island farmhouse only to quickly discover that it’s possessed by supernatural forces. Best recognized as a writer, Victor Levin has penned episodes for such popular television programs as the marriage-centered sitcom Mad About You and the 1960s set drama Mad Men, as well as scripted such charming movies as Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! and Then She Found Me. However, in 1999 he dabbled in directing, helming an ep of Mad About You along with a little known venture called The Successor. But his latest script, 5 to 7, has spurred his return to the director's chair, and has stirred up a fantastically promising cast. Mockingbird Pictures in conjunction with Demarest Films has unveiled a press release revealing six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Oscar nominee Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Bérénice Marlohe (Skyfall), Lambert Wilson (Of Gods and Men) and Olivia Thirlby (Being Flynn) have joined Anton Yelchin for this New York-set romantic comedy. 5 to 7 stars Yelchin as a young, aspiring ...

Tina Fey makes funny TV shows, funny movies and funny books.
Director Paul Weitz often goes for something beyond funny -- emotional stories of parents and children trying to puzzle out something beyond flesh and blood that bonds them.
She did "30 Rock" and "Date Night." He did "About a Boy" and "Being Flynn."
And somewhere on the uncertain ground between the two is "Admission." It's a romantic comedy -- of sorts -- about a lovelorn Princeton admissions officer forced to reconcile her judgmental job with the news that the baby she gave up for adoption 17 years ago might be applying to ... Princeton.
It's not a particularly satisfying comedy, but thanks to the cast and some of the odd directions it takes, "Admission" is an intensely likable one.

He started off with a bang, so to speak, with his 1999 directorial debut, American Pie, and has gone on to become one of the most prolific directors and producers in Hollywood. Chicago – Hot on the heels of the wondrous 10 Most Overlooked Films of 2012 and the illustrious first look at The 10 Best Films of 2012 comes “The 10 Best Films of 2012, Part Two,” as rendered by Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com.
The best films of 2012 are a mixed bag, but there was incredible experiences in all of them, brought forth from a mix of old veterans, new voices and even debut filmmakers. There is less of the end-of-the-world theme of 2011 as if the end is near, let’s have a celebration. It continues to amaze me, now in my fifth year as a professional film critic, that the creative landscape continues to astound the senses and deliver the goods.
Of course there are several films that could have occupied the 10th spot on the list. They include the 2011 stragglers – “We Have a Pope” and “Footnote.” The notable documentaries – “The Central Park Five,” “Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry” and “Samsara.

I don't go see every movie. I do my best to see as many as I can, but there are some I just don't feel I need to see in order to do my job. Those I tend to skip are films I'm quite certain I will not enjoy because what need is there, really, for me to head into a movie in a foul mood, with little enthusiasm to review a movie? Especially if said movie is the reason my mood is so foul. That said, sometimes the job takes you places you would prefer not to go and sometimes those movies you don't expect to be very good are movies you need to go see. Such films found their way onto this list. Some of the other entries are simply films I wanted to be good, films that piqued my curiosity or just thought would be fun. They weren't.

Our friend and great actor, Robert De Niro, will probably be nominated for the 7th time and may win his 3 Oscar. We hope that the Academy includes Robert De Niro in the “Best Supporting Actor” category for his great performance in “Silver Linings Playbook.” Robert De Niro launched his prolific motion picture career in Brian De Palma’s “The Wedding Party” in 1969. By 1974 he had won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor in recognition of his critically acclaimed performance in “Bang the Drum Slowly” and from the National Society of Film Critics for Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets.” In 1974 De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the young Vito Corleone in “The Godfather, Part II.” In 1980 he won his second Oscar, as Best Actor, for his extraordinary portrayal of Jake La Motta in Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.” De Niro...

To be sure, applying to college is a frenzy of emotions for high school graduates each year, but we can't remember when it was depicted as being as wacky as it is in the trailer for "Admission." The film, directed by Paul Weitz ("Being Flynn," "About A Boy"), is a dramedy promising laughs and perhaps tears, in a movie we're not quite ready to buy a ticket for just yet. Based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz, Fey plays a admissions official at Princeton who is basically a refashioned version of Liz Lemon: single and quirky. But her world is changed when unassuming, Earth-hugging Paul Rudd shows up and presents a seemingly unqualified candidate for her to consider. And that candidate might also be her son. Wait, what? The trailer reveals that she gave up a kid for adoption a long time ago, and now her life is changed...

In what might be a bit of an over-correction from last year’s two-song race, The Academy has released the largest list of Oscar-eligible original songs in years, topping out at 75 tunes from the movies of the year. Naturally, the big names are there — Adele with “Skyfall” and Arcade Fire with their work on The Hunger Games — but there are also some far out choices like work featured in Death By China and Saint Dracula. With that many songs in the mix, it was bound to be an eclectic group, but even though it’ll be whittled down for the final nominee list announced January 10th, it’s nice for the time being to see “Ladies of Tampa” from Magic Mike right next to “Love Always Comes as a Surprise” from Madagascar 3. Here’s the complete list with a few examples for your listening pleasure: “For You” from Act of Valor “Metaphorical Blanket” from Any Day Now “Let It Rain...

With 2013 rapidly approaching, it seems to be an apt time to look back over what has been a pretty memorable year for cinema. Everybody is beginning to pick out their personal favourites from 2012 and various sites, blogs and publications are starting to release their yearly best-of lists as well. Last week an early contender was released in the form of the ’2012 Movie Trailer Mash-up’, which you can view below.
If you’re still itching for more, today we have a new video which will certainly take some beating in the highly competitive end of year retrospective movie montage stakes.
