Tanit Pheonix the only saving grace.
DaBrainiac2 October 2005
If your not familiar with the Crazy Monkey crowd..... Don't watch! Unlike the Jackass movie, this one does not include various stunts that they perform in extreme situations (wink, wink). It's just about a couple of guy's that are trying to become famous very quickly.

It has one or two moments of hilarity followed by ..... ummmm nothing much. The acting is painful (it's meant to be) the story almost non existent ( it's also meant to be).

Gavin and Brandon are to say the least stupid (there supposed to be)... If your'e stoned then you'll love it!!! Tanit Pheonix is very hot.... too darn hot I tell you and I personally loved the cop who acts like Horatio Caine from CSI Miami with his sunglasses. Do not pay good money to watch it, don't rent it on DVD,wait for it to come on TV and even then only watch if you accidentally flick through and it's on.

Some good, but doesn't quite cut it...
douglasr23 April 2006
The movie is about two South African chaps, living in the suburban limbo that many young South Africans find them in a post-Apartheid era where Affirmative Action has cut their options down. The actors are mostly accomplished at their art, the cinematography is quite good, but the script and editing lets the whole thing down. Although supposed to be a comedy, the chuckles can be counted on one hand. Wry smiles are the best that I could generate. Extensive use of slow motion slows the movie down to a crawl at times, and it somehow never gets going. This may be deliberate, reflecting the lives of our protagonists who also never seem to get going, but it does not compel the viewer used to fast paced Hollywood action.

Low budget? Definitely. But low budget is a challenge to film makers, and should not be a death knell.

On the bright side, their are no cheap politically correct themes, and no pie-in-the-face scenes a la Schuster to get cheap ratings.

A huge pity that the actor who plays Brett was recently killed in a senseless killing. This will probably give the movie undeserved cult status. Judged on it's own merits, it does not deserve cult status.

Absolute rubbish
jackvs12 June 2009
The only way that anyone enjoyed this movie, or found it remotely amusing, was by being so drugged out of their mind that they were actually laughing at the stage curtains moving in the breeze.

Bad, bad, bad, in Malories immortal words! Damn right that the only place money got spent was on the marketing - it was the only way they could get people into the movie house.

This entirely justifies the pirating of movies - it's actually criminal to expect people to pay to be exposed to this drivel! Do not rent this movie - rather convince your worst enemy to do so, in fact steal a copy and post it to him.

Worst movie I've ever seen
hennier16 February 2006
This is the worst movie I have ever seen. I tried to laugh at the jokes, but it took a lot of effort.

It's just not funny. What is funny to me is that people can give this movie 10 out of 10.

There is nothing good about this movie. I must say that the marketing for the movie is actually good. I think the producer spent most of his budget on marketing.

Anyway, I just want to let people know how bad this movie is. Don't waste money to go and see this. It is really not worth the time and money.

total, utter rubbish
noonbluetaylor3 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was terrible, further evidence that commercial success has no bearing on quality... to me its no great surprise that it was number one- it began its inevitable and inexorable move to the top of the charts weeks before it was released on the back of a huge marketing campaign (which included not one but two appearances on Idols!!! who can ask for more; a spot on one of the most watched TV programs at prime time too!) Someone mentioned the Animation in the beginning and i have to admit it was very well done- however you have to get worried when the title sequence of a movie is more thoughtful, more entertaining and of higher quality than the entire rest of the film.

The whole thing seems terribly unambitious with Williams and Jack shuffling along almost apologetically, and the film suffers from the usual south African film look- why the hell do our movies always appear like they were shot on a camcorder bought at the bargain bin at Makro when we produce soom beautifully shot and realized adverts?(Allan Grey, the new Edgar's ads, BP etc etc).

The Crazy monkey vignettes worked on MTV, as they were a successful parody of the ridiculous Jack Ass. However stretching the "stoner-humour" over an hour and a half becomes incredibly tiresome as do the distracting and unnecessary cameo appearances by South African "celebrities", which are about as subtle as the subliminal shots of the devil in the exorcist- in other words they serve no real purpose other than to break your concentration. You have to ask yourself what real value, intrinsic or otherwise, having Schalk Burger and John Vismis in a movie adds.

There is a serious lack of focus as well and the whole movie fails to gel as a whole, what is the purpose of the manziman saga? Its like an in joke that no one in the audience is ever made privy to.

Brendan Jack also makes for an annoying on screen entity, he is way to smarmy, rotund and self-assured. He is like a fat kid that dropped some smarties down his pants and discovered his penis. No i don't feel bad saying that; here's a guy who has gone incredibly far on the steam of a lot of ambition and very ordinary talent. His eyes positively gleam with ambition, he is a master of self-promotion but sadly he makes for a very sub-standard actor.

There is one small glimmer of hope in an otherwise doomed venture. Gavin Williams gives a quiet, understated performance, he's affable with a warm screen presence. But he is only rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

This is not the great south African comedy some people were expecting, it is not a good movie, it is not a mediocre movie, it is a very, very bad movie.Putting a whole bunch of south African pseudo-celebrities in a movie does not a comedy make. Its like an all-star cast with no stars. You almost expect Brendan Jack to pop up at the end of the movie in a sick parody of porky pig and johnny rotten and belch out "have you ever had that feeling that you have been cheated?"

Cool and Charming
AnotherFire13 October 2005
I completely agree with this film not being "gotten" by everyone. Although I don't know how.

It's a total piece of anti-cool coolness. And the Napoleon Dynamite example is spot-on.

I've actually seen it twice and got more jokes the second time. Once again, I can see how some of the jokes are going to go over the head of the less attentive audiences. Also, some of the jokes are not as straightforward as their MTV sketches. But it still maintains all the deadpan delivery style and Crazy Monkey pacing.

The film moves around nicely, so there's always something to keep your attention. And you're never sure what's going to pop out of the heads of these small-town 'heroes'.

It's fun and tight, and gosh – even has a bit of heart to it.

Worst Movie ever made
brucepir1 November 2005
This is the worst movie ever made anywhere on planet earth. Zero out of ten is flattery. They should allow minus numbers. The two main characters are a Wayne's world lookalike and his sidekick who tries to model his role on Chevy Chase. If you think their acting is bad, it gets worse with the cop who models his role on Jim Carey and fails, miserably. Occasional attempts at American accents. It is quite a difficult accent for South Africans and impossible for any of this cast.

Was there a plot?. I don't think so. The only faint glimmer of humour was the high school address by the head-boy, Idols compère Colin Moss, also acting the role of a Joe Kool Fonzarelli character, which he did OK with. Danny Kaye also sang a song or two and these two guys's personal fan club obviously raised the vote count to what looks like a respectable rating. Waste of time. Waste of money. No laughs.

Clever & Witty South African humor
Minx78_za13 October 2005
This happens to be the only South African movie containing really clever and witty type of humor (unlike moronic Leon Shuster movies) - comic timing is perfect :-) Also, us South Africans are sick and tired of seeing blood, crime, and anything AIDS related - this has been shoved down our throats all the time, on the news, in the print media as well as with other SA movies. Straight outta Benoni is a real breath of fresh air!

You have to be south African to truly appreciate it. There is also a need for your brain cells to make contact at least once in a while - viewers who dislike the movie are simply too dumb to get it. WELL DONE BOYS :-) WE WANT MORE

Cracking first time effort.
gavin-16114 October 2005
I think fans of more "dialogue" driven comedy, often the type that improves with multiple viewings, as opposed to frat boy gross out humor, will really enjoy this movie. I liked it the first time, and really loved it the second and the third was ridiculously funny. There's a lot of subtlety in there that can be missed. Being a South African, I feel this is a brave, foolish step in the right direction for filmic comedy in this country.

And the movie works on quite a subversive level I found. It really highlights the whole "instant fame" society we live in where everyone believes they can make it. It's about following your dreams in a really haphazard way. Awesome.

cutting edge
guyjoubjoub13 October 2005
This film blew me away - it is cutting edge stuff. This was out there like Wayne's World or Napoleon Dyanamite or any of these new age cult movies. I can't believe South Africans made this movie. We are really coming of age. Our local cinema is going to fly if this is the kind of film that is being made at present. Yes, not all of it was brilliant, and some of the characters were quite over the top, but overall it was absolutely amazing. It was also too funny for words. Brendan Jack is South Africa's Jack Black. They even have some such similar names. It must be a sign. This is one fantastic piece of work - I am sure these Crazy Monkey guys are going to go from strength to strength. I hope they continue doing their stuff.

A Classic
Bodey10113 October 2005
I saw this film with thirty of my closest friends. That's right, thirty. And we've never laughed at a local film like this in our lives.

It seems like some people don't really get some of the humour. Just like some people don't see the irony in 'The Simpsons'. Or how some people thought that 'Napoleon Dynamite' was pointless and unfunny.

This movie is going to be a cult classic.

I agree with the one reviewer here who thinks that the cop's CSI shtick was great. He got some of the best responses for sure. I don't agree that Tanit was the only saving grace. If that's what you think, then your credibility's blown.

Let's agree to disagree. Except I'm right.

This film is just straight up fun. It's also smarter than a lot of people see.

dude, this is sublime!
jacobleavitt14 November 2005
i don't know why i waited this long to see it! my older brother saw it and liked it enough. but i had no idea i would enjoy it so much. i know these people. not the actors -- but people just like them. in the story, these 2 guys have their 10 year reunion coming up and they want to get famous before they go. so they go out and try to get famous, mainly, but getting an American actress who is shooting a movie in town to come to see their band play. this isn't like a big broad comedy from America. nor is it the simple satire of the crazy monkey mtv adverts. this is slower, lower key, and awfully funny. i had a smile on my face that carried me right out of the theater. the performances are spot on, for south Africa or anywhere... the music was cool. i've been hearing that song on the radio. i'm buying the DVD to see this one again. classic.

Straight Outta the Top Drawer!
andrew-106914 October 2005
I was never really convinced that anything original ever happened in Benoni. (Besides ox wagon drive-by shootings, of course.) How wrong I was. If movies could be compared to theme parks, this one is a double-storey Disneyland with costume characters on speed, free passes, all-you-can-eat and centrefold ushers - there's something for everybody. Hail the writers. Applaud the actors. Respect to the visionaries who put their koeksusters on the block to put this together. To those who knock the film - how sad. Go home and enjoy your Deuce Bigalow collection if that's what passes as original comedy for you. To those who enjoyed it, push for a sequel. Rock on Crazy Monkey...
