Straight Outta Benoni (2005)
dude, this is sublime!
i don't know why i waited this long to see it! my older brother saw it and liked it enough. but i had no idea i would enjoy it so much. i know these people. not the actors -- but people just like them. in the story, these 2 guys have their 10 year reunion coming up and they want to get famous before they go. so they go out and try to get famous, mainly, but getting an American actress who is shooting a movie in town to come to see their band play. this isn't like a big broad comedy from America. nor is it the simple satire of the crazy monkey mtv adverts. this is slower, lower key, and awfully funny. i had a smile on my face that carried me right out of the theater. the performances are spot on, for south Africa or anywhere... the music was cool. i've been hearing that song on the radio. i'm buying the DVD to see this one again. classic.
Sin City (2005)
a whole new old world
If a pulp artist could paint a movie, he could do no better than paint Sin City. I've never seen anything like this on screen. I don't know Frank Miller's work. This was my first exposure to him. But the characters leap off the screen. They are larger than life. Mickey Rourke is beyond brilliant in what must be a career saving role. Bruce Willis is back in top form. That hot girl, hot as always. My friends and I wanted to scream blue murder at the projectionist, seeing as the first half of the movie was out of focus, but that didn't stop any of us from savoring every black and white with a splash of bold color frame.
My only beef is that the story got a bit draggy in the middle. I've read that the director shot this page for page from the graphic novel. Maybe he should have done a little nip tuck to bring this back to earth... But overall, damn! This is one good American movie.
