Stephen K. Bannon’s ascension from Breitbart News executive to President-elect Donald Trump’s chief White House strategist and senior counselor shocked the world, in no small part because the alt-right figure has no background in government management. However, it’s not the first time Bannon has attempted to lead an industry outside of his professional experience. Bannon’s new role may be an ideal platform for propagandistic ambitions, but his career in independent film — first in distribution, then production — casts doubt on how much he believes in any of it.
Ten years ago, Bannon oversaw the distribution of independent films released by Wellspring Media, a company that supported a wide range of international cinema as well as gay-themed and other “transgressive” titles. Movies acquired and released under his tenure include the experimental Lgbt documentary “Tarnation” and “Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry,” a pro-Kerry documentary that opened during the 2004 election.

In 2005 director Rupert Murray released Unknown White Male, a documentary about the true story of a man named Doug Bruce. He woke up on Coney Island with total amnesia and we follow him around as rediscovers himself and the world around him. I found the intriguing premise to be told in a boring, over-stylized manner. Then I heard about the next film from House of Wax and Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra, with the same title and a similar premise. Although one features Liam Neeson kicking a lot of ass, it came to my surprise that the two films have nothing to do with each other.
Based on a novel by Didier Van Cauwelaert, they shortened the title to Unknown. Neeson stars alongside January Jones, Diane Kruger and Frank Langella. It looks like a solid little thriller prime gearing to mimic Taken’s box office. Check out the first trailer below via Yahoo.

Warner Bros. Pictures is planning a massive 2011, especially for us genre fans. Earlier today they announced January release dates for The Rite and Unknown White Male, now three more are coming later that year. On April 22, Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood (formerly The Girl With The Red Riding Hood) adaptation starring Amanda Seyfried arrives in theaters, with Death attacking a new group of teens in Final Destination 5 3D on August 26. The Todd Lincoln directed ghost story The Apparition haunts theaters on September 9 with Steven Soderbergh's star heavy (Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow) viral thriller Contagion (now in 3-D) hitting theaters on October 21. I'd expect Contagion to shift dates when Lionsgate sticks a Saw or Paramount continues Paranormal Activity near that date.

I love watching movies I grew up on and seeing an actor in it that I just now recognize who they are. That happened this weekend when some friends and I were watching Brainscan and Frank Langella popped up. He plays Detective Hayden. Anyway, that has nothing to do with this story, I just wanted to point out that Frank Langella has been in the acting game for a long time and it seems like he’s just now becoming a household name. I’m aware though, it’s probably from his wise decision to star in last year’s Frost/Nixon.

Dark Castle is contemplating not such an unknown actor for Unknown White Male. Recovering from his morning, Liam Neeson is in talks to star in the thriller.
Liam Neeson Discussing Unknown White Male
Directed by Juame Collet-Serra off a script by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell, Unknown White Male will have Neeson play a doctor who goes to Berlin for a medical conference and gets into a car accident. When he awakens from a coma, he discovers that not only doesn.t his wife recognize him, she is living with another man who has assumed his identity.
If the story sounds familiar, then you likely read Out of My Head, the novel on which the film is based by author Didier Van Cauwelaert.

And more importantly, how did this become a story you wanted to explore? Rupert Murray: I’d been reading horror articles in the newspapers about the oceans sporadically for about 5 years, but I always thought – how do I put these together into a film? I always had had a passion for marine life and then I read Charles Clover’s book The End of The Line and I realized my search was over. He had spent 15 years researching and amassing stories and data that laid the whole thing out and to me, he revealed two things, one; it’s ten times worse than I ever imagined, and two; it’s so easy (relatively to other global problems) to solve. So I decided to contact him and make the film and so two years and a

Here's a brief rundown of what's going on in the world of horror movies. "The Box," Richard Kelly's film based on "Button Button" by Richard Matheson, has had its release date moved to put it against "Saw VI." The film now opens October 30. ... And speaking of "Saw VI", Shawnee Smith has just been confirmed as having a role in that. ... There's a movie called Possession that's been delayed many, many times by now, about two men who get in a car accident and then seem to have switched identities, or at least stolen identities, afterward. Even though that movie can't seem to get a release date, Dark Castle is planning a film that sounds an awful lot like it. Joel Silver will produce Unknown White Male, a thriller about a doctor who awakes from a coma after a car accident only to find that another man has assumed his identity. Juame Collet-Serra, who previously made House of Wax and the upcoming Orphan for Dark Castle, will take charge of this one as well. It's a neat idea, even if it's a familiar one, and a good take on it might have more luck than poor Possession.

New York -- The tragic death of actress Natasha Richardson has led her husband, Liam Neeson, to set aside his career, at least for the moment.
Projects for Neeson, who left the Toronto set of the Atom Egoyan marital drama "Chloe" to be by his wife's side after she suffered a head injury while skiing Monday, are understandably on hold for the British actor.
The actress' death came just as Neeson was experiencing a career resurgence following the success of his most recent film, "Taken." Fox's modestly budgeted thriller was a surprise hit in February, earning a whopping $200 million at the worldwide boxoffice.
On the heels of "Taken," the actor has been under consideration for "Unknown White Male," an international thriller that Joel Silver's Dark Castle is producing for Warners to distribute.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dark Castle's next will be Unkown White Male, 'a thriller about a doctor who awakens from a coma to find he seemingly has been replaced by another man'. Ok, right, got it. Super creepy looking Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct while Karl Gadjusek (writer of Taken) wrote a draft of the script. Let's see, super stylized meets Saturday night action flick fare...sounds like this might be a case of style over substance, but then again, nothing that Dark Castle has put out has been all that ground-breaking, strictly popcorn cinema. What do you guys think? At least it's not a remake, right? Right?...

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees Wednesday for its documentary award, including two that examine aspects of the war in Iraq. The nominees are Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani for The Devil's Miner, Werner Herzog for Grizzly Man, Sean McAllister for The Liberace of Baghdad, Rupert Murray for Unknown White Male, and Brent Renaud and Craig Renaud for Off To War: Welcome to Baghdad. "The best documentary filmmaking provides a look inside a particular place or time and leaves us feeling like we've been transported to it, as a real eyewitness," DGA president Michael Apted said. "These talented filmmakers have made provocative and challenging movies that demonstrate why audiences are increasingly attending and why distributors are releasing more documentary films theatrically." The winner will be announced at the 58th annual DGA Awards show on Jan. 28 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

- Well after a long weekend, the Sydney Film Festival is now competing with work hours and University examinations for the next two weeks. One would of thought that perhaps the festival would match education holiday period to draw more young people in and get them interested in independent cinema, especially Australian independent cinema as it desperately needs more of an audience. Not only that is the disappointing response filmmakers have given to their film being selected for screening in the festival. Very few filmmakers make the trip to Australia to accompany their films, after enjoying Q & A’s for every film at Sundance this is somewhat disappointing.
