This week marks 20 years of Get Rich or Die Tryin’, 50 Cent’s star-making opus that rode a bevy of hits, an Eminem co-sign, and Dr. Dre’s talismanic touch to sell 12 million records worldwide in 2003. 50’s mesh of New York bravado and melody catapulted him to instant superstardom, with “In Da Club” dominating the radio and “Many Men” feeding the streets.
Many rap fans make the mistake of attributing hip-hop’s push toward melody to a sole artist, be it Ye, Lil Wayne, Future, or Drake. But the shift...

Seventeen or so years ago, as the world was first getting to know the rising underdog Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, it would have been hard to imagine the most controversial man in hip-hop receiving a star on the Walk of Fame. It would have been even harder to imagine that his successes as a beverage entrepreneur, actor, venture capitalist and executive producer of cable and network television would have been just as central to that honor as his music.
But that’s exactly where 2020 finds the Queens hip-hop mogul. With “Power” — the Starz series for which he served as executive producer, co-star and, most recently, an episode director — finally coming to an end after six seasons, Jackson is already busy with several new small-screen projects. The in-production Starz spinoff “Power Book II: Ghost” is part of a massive development deal Jackson struck with the cable net, and just as significantly, he...

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson advised Eminem to not go back at Nick Cannon’s recent diss records, which are generally considered to be underwhelming efforts by the “Masked Singer” host to bury a man considered to be the greatest battle rapper of all time.
“I told him don’t even say nothing to him,” Jackson told TheWrap Wednesday at ABC’s Television Critics Association press tour day. “The record is terrible.”
Cannon and some friends have actually dropped two diss tracks attacking Eminem: first “The Invitation” and then “Pray for Him.” Neither song has been particularly well-received by the internet.

For his part, all Eminem has contributed to this war of words is a few tweets.
Jackson, who stars on and executive produces upcoming ABC drama “For Life,” helped to keep it that way.

"Keep to yourself, mind your own business, because this is the last stop for you." A trailer has arrived for an indie crime drama titled Wetlands (not to be confused with the German sex comedy of the same name), which is hitting theaters in a few weeks. From first-time director Emanuele Della Valle, this stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (from Get Rich or Die Tryin', G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Thor: The Dark World, Trumbo, Suicide Squad) as a top cop from Philly who finds himself working in a precinct in the Wetlands, the no-man's land surrounding Atlantic City, New Jersey. There he mixes with locals before the infamous hurricane arrives and threatens to destroy lives. The full cast includes Heather Graham, Jennifer Ehle, Anthony Mackie, Christopher McDonald, Rob Morgan, Lauren Lavera, Sean Ringgold, Louis Mustillo, Tyler Elliot Burke, Pamela Dunlap, and Barry Markowitz. The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

You know "Power" even before you start watching it. The drama executive produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson exudes the qualities, but not quality, of his other "street" films, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" (a well-above-average film, actually) and "Righteous Kill" (the Robert DeNiro/Al Pacino team-up that's as awful as "Heat" is superb). The formula is simple: A muscle-y tall black male with a limited vocabulary proves his toughness early on before revealing a side of himself not welcomed by his single-minded peers. He wants out of the game, but he can't admit to anyone -- not even himself -- that he's scared to try. Sadly, "Power" doesn't seem to elevate the conversation past those previously explored ideas, nor does it carry the sense of urgency needed to escalate its events. The posters and early previews of the new Starz series stressed the duality of Ghost, our lead character's most...

Geez, has it really been a decade since Get Rich Or Die Tryin'? Huh, looks like we're getting old. At any rate Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has a new album out called Animal Ambition and you don't get rich or die tryin' without some major promo steez. And thankfully, Disney provided the perfect opportunity for Fiddy to riff on. The rapper dropped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night where "Malefiftycent" was unveiled, a trailer parody riffing on, you guessed it, "Maleficent." Considering the amount of effort Kimmel usually puts into these things, this seemed pretty lackluster. It's mostly the trailer you've seen with Fiddy subbed in for a couple throwaway lines that aren't very funny. But hey, curiosity is a strange animal, perhaps an ambitious one, and we know you're gonna click below like we did. It's science. [First Showing]...

Back when Curtis James Jackson III was working an outer-borough corner — and before the South Jamaica resident became rap star/movie star/business mogul 50 Cent — he saw a lot of power plays and pole positioning go down among some would-be street kingpins. Compared to some of the sharks he's encountered in boardrooms, however, those guys in the drug game seemed like amateurs. "Oh man, on a corporate level — I've seen more ruthless moves made in black and white on a piece of paper than I've seen on the streets of my old neighborhood,...

Hard to believe it's been more than a decade since 50 Cent rapped on Get Rich Or Die Tryin', one of hip hop's most influential albums. Time hasn't been kind to Fitty: one could argue the record industry has never been the same since the mid aughts. But he certainly lived out the title of that album, diversifying his portfolio with a number of multimedia strategies, including acting. With this latest casting missive, however, Curtis 50 Cent might have nailed his biggest onscreen role yet. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the rapper-actor-Vitamin Water pitchman has landed a part in Spy. You may not recognize this movie by the title . it's what we're now calling the Melissa McCarthy vehicle that originally went by the name Susan Cooper. An improvement, even as it swaps out one type of generic for another, but whatever. While no plot details have been shared regarding his role, apparently...

New York (AP) — After battling with his major label for years, 50 Cent has decided to become an independent artist. The rapper announced Thursday that he's leaving his longtime record label, Universal Music Group's Interscope Records, and Eminem's imprint, Shady/Aftermath. The Grammy winner and his G-Unit Records have signed a distribution agreement with Caroline, the independent label at Capital Music Group. Capitol is one of the many labels that are part of Universal Music Group. 50 Cent launched an ultra-successful, six-times platinum debut with "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" in 2003, when he burst on the music scene with Eminem as his mentor. His sophomore album, 2005's "The Massacre," was almost as successful, but other albums didn't match his previous efforts and he expressed his unhappiness with his label. 50 Cent had been planning to release a fifth album on the label, but it was set with multiple release dates and singles,...

50 Cent has pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges, E! News confirms. The Get Rich or Die Tryin' Mc entered the plea in person during an arraignment Monday in Van Nuys Superior Court stemming from allegations he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend at her Toluca Lake, Calif., condo on June 23. An L.A. judge also handed 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, a protective order barring him from coming within 100 yards from the model. The 37-year-old hip-hopster was also ordered not to have any contact with her and must turn over to authorities any weapons in his possession or sell them to a federally licensed firearms dealer. According to Lapd, 50 Cent and the alleged victim got into a nasty spat...

50 Cent lost his temper in a big way last month, according to prosecutors. The 37-year-old rapper has been charged with domestic violence and four counts of vandalism for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend at her condo in Toluca Lake, Calif. According to the L.A. City Attorney's Office, police responded to a call from the residence on June 23 when Fiddy, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, had been arguing with the alleged victim and started to take his anger out on her property. Per the Lapd, his ex locked herself in the bedroom, after which he kicked down the door and kicked her, causing an unspecified injury. Authorities allege that the Get Rich or Die Tryin' rapper caused...

In the underdog vein of hip-hop stardom dramas like Hustle & Flow, Get Rich or Die Tryin', and gold standard 8 Mile, co-directors Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos's variation on the too-familiar subgenre (the rising inner-city superstar here is a Latina tomboy) is more heartfelt, humanistic, and entertaining than such a clichéd showbiz cautionary tale has any right to be. Or maybe those superlatives should be spit about breakout lead Gina Rodriguez, a two-fisted knockout as streetwise L.A. wunderkind Majo "Filly Brown" Tonorio, whose angriest sociopolitical rhymes have been borrowed wholesale from an uneasy inspiration: "My moms is up in Chino on a 10 count," Majo admits to her new loverboy DJ, just before her image is sexed up by a small-time producer an...

Yesterday we looked at 25 Best Original Screenplay contenders and today we turn our attention to Best Adapted Screenplay. The field here isn't as big, boasting 17 total contenders right now, but perhaps after looking over the list you'll think of a couple contenders I may have overlooked. For the time being my top five is set and at this point they really are the most obvious five though I'm sure the title I have at #6 is one many will believe deserves a spot among the top five early contenders for a nomination. Let's take a look at my five and then please share your thoughts in the comments below... 1.) George Clooney and Grant Heslov (Monuments Men) - Clearly my early year favorite is Clooney's Monuments Men. The World War II setting and the talent involved make it too obvious the choice. That said, I plan on reading Robert M. Edsel and...

Espn's Erin Andrews got some unwelcome love from rapper 50 Cent as she was on air reporting at Nascar's Daytona 500 race. As Andrews roamed around pit road looking for driver Danica Patrick, she ran into the "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" rapper.
"Of course, 50 Cent here," Andrews starts out saying. Then 50 leans in for a kiss, and Erin pulls back, offering him one cheek and then the other before his lips finally land. "I've got talk to Danica Patrick," Erin says, before aksing, "What are you doing here?"
Fifty's answer? "Enjoying myself." Indeed he is. Erin attempts to walk away as Fifty follows her. He grabs for the back of her vest as she walks, appearing to look downwards for a quick rear end checkout.
The footage was uploaded to youtube, and the internet delivered, of course, by turning it into a Gif. For your viewing pleasure, here is Erin Andrew's...

How does Rick Ross escape a shooting uninjured when he was the target? Well, if you ask 50 Cent, the answer is easy—it was all fake! The Get Rich or Die Tryin' star took to Twitter shortly after Ricky Rozay's scare to discuss his thoughts on the matter, and seeing how the two have been beefing it since 2009, it wasn't exactly a "Oh my, glad you're Ok," message. "Hahaha fat boy hit the building?lol it looks staged to me. No hole's in da car," 50 tweeted, with a photo of the Teflon Don's car (which had no bullet holes) after his crash. "hahaha that boy was spooked. I ride like Obama level 6 built proof, bomb proof, you already know," he continued....

Over the past several years, Curtis Jackson, aka rapper 50 Cent, has made a concerted effort to distinguish himself not only as a musician but as an actor as well. Jackson made his cinematic debut in the 2005 semi-autobiographical crime drama Get Rich or Die Tryin' before landing a supporting role opposite Academy Award–winners Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the 2008 crime thriller Righteous Kill. Jackson's latest feature, Freelancers, pairs him again with De Niro and another Academy Award–winner, Forest Whitaker. Jackson told Hollywood Dailies that working with actors like Whitaker and De Niro keeps him wanting to raise his game as an actor.
Of course, you've got to be prepared for it. You don't want to be there with that caliber of talent and not show up performance-wise.
