The Next Big Step in Running Shoes?

2 hours ago | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

The On Running Shoe is meant to combat the problems created by over-soft shoes that make your support muscles degrade.

Running shoes now feature all manner of crazy shock-absorption systems. But the industry's dirty little secret: All that padding might not be good for you. A new shoe being released in February attempts to solve that problem, and has just won an Ispo Brand New award, a German laurel that recognizes the year's most innovative sports products.

According to the inventors of the On Running Shoe, the problem with modern running shoes is that when you hit the ground on a big cushy sole, you don't have a solid surface to push off from with your next step. As a result, some of your support muscles atrophy, due to lack of use--and that leaves you prone to injury.

The On, by contrast, has a sole that collapses on impact, offering cushioning. »

[DVD Review] Five Fingers

11 July 2009 10:14 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Whatever happened to Ryan Phillippe, anyway? Adolescent girls everywhere (myself included) had nothing but the highest hopes for him after the tacky teenage melodrama (though it didn't seem so at the time), Cruel Intentions. And hey, as it turns out, he's still a pretty good actor.

In Five Fingers, the aforementioned Phillippe plays Martijn, a young, idealistic Dutch pianist-slash-banker who travels to Morocco to start a charity program to help feed the hungry. Upon his arrival in the country he's promptly kidnapped by terrorists who hold him hostage and interrogate him regarding his intentions for coming to the country, physically punishing him whenever they believe he is withholding information. I won't say how, exactly, but I think you might be able to infer it from the title.

The film takes a little while to pick up, but once it does it's well worth it. At first it appeared to me »

This Week on DVD: Knowing, Push, Nursery University

7 July 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Say what you will, but the biggest DVD release of the week is Nicolas Cage's latest masterpiece Knowing (and I'm only partially being sarcastic, since I actually liked the movie), along with David Goyer's The Unborn and the sci-fi/action/thriller Push starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning. Aside from that, there's Reclaiming The Blade (a documentary about swords), Nursery University (a documentary about "Ivy League" nursery school admissions), a new Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection, and a box set of the first six animated Charlie Brown TV specials. Also: Peter Benchley's The Deep and Grumpy Old Men on Blu-ray. Are you planning on buying or renting anything this week? Knowing [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) The Unborn [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Push [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Five Fingers [7] Night Train [8] (DVD, Blu-ray [9]) Coco Chanel [10] Dead Wood [11] One Missed Call 3: Final [12] Nursery University [13] Reclaiming The Blade [14] The Peacekeepers [15] Kath & Kim: Season 1 [16] Matlock: The Third »

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 7/7

7 July 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Knowing

Forget Nostradamus. In this Nick Cage flick, a young girl in the '50s draws a picture of numbers for a time capsule. Fifty years later, when the contents are examined, it turns out that those numbers indicate the dates, death tolls, and coordinates of major disasters, and a few haven't happened yet! But it's not exactly the doomsday flick fans would hope for. In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson says: "rather than becoming a comfortable hybrid between a small, smart movie and a big, dumb movie, Knowing became a horrible mutation, bulging out in all the wrong places, with unsightly scars where the butcher's knife had been." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

Push

Not every Dakota Fanning movie is a shocker of a drama. In this psychic espionage thriller, she plays a "watcher" and one of the psychic rogues determined to end a creepy government agency. »

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: July 7, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Knowing I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one and you can read that right here. I still find this a fascinating movie and definitely recommend everyone check it out at least once, but the second time around the two hour runtime does begin to really weigh on you and I didn't end up finding anything new that I hadn't noticed already. I personally hoped for more from a second viewing but came up empty. Not sure this one is a purchase, but do give it a chance if you haven't seen it yet. The Unborn (Unrated) Meh, not a very good movie to begin with (read my theatrical review here) and I highly doubt this supposed "unrated" cut will be any better. If you want to see a low-rent PG-13 horror I would recommend The Uninvited over this one. »

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: April 28, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Star Trek (Original Series) - The Complete First Season I have watched about five of the first season episodes on Paramount's Blu-ray release of the original "Star Trek" series and as expected they look phenomenal, just as they did when I reviewed the HD DVD edition of the first season. However, gone is the bulky packaging, and the set has been cut down to seven discs instead of ten, both details are fantastic news. As far as differences, the main absence is a 90-minute documentary called "Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier" and there isn't an included booklet of any kind. However, improved menus, on the fly switching between the enhanced versions and the original effects is an impressive addition even if you only check it out once or twice. Overall, I think this is a must own, but »
