Doctor Who Meets Chris Morris . Almost
Theo Robertson7 August 2013
Humour is a very subjective thing . Some people laugh at genocidal murder while it leaves some other cold . Jihadists for example are well known for their lack of humour . While they misquote the Quran and talk about waking up in the Garden of paradise surrounded by 72 Virgins causing every sensible person to laugh they remain stone faced . In other words comedy can be very hit and miss but this spoof documentary by Mark Gatiss more often than not hits the target as accurately as an American drone strike

Any DOCTOR WHO spoof that starts off with the line " This could be anywhere in Great Britain . it could be Cheltenham , it could be Bute " gets an extra point as we're told off the tale of Lllanfairfach , a small Welsh mining town that hit the headlines in the 1970s when it was invaded by an outbreak of giant maggots . Well not really Llanfairfach is a made up village in the 1973 DOCTOR WHO story The Green Death in one of the most fondly remembered stories of the 1970s

Gatiss plays Terry Scalon an investigative reporter and mirrors one of those journalists that feature in a Chris Morris satire . This is both the strength and weakness of the featurette - it resembles Chris Morris but pulls its punches a little bit too much . You want paedogeddon ? well the problem is this has to meet a PG certificate rather than brutal merciless satire . Gentle rib tickling about Wales , homosexuality and corporate capitalism are tickled a bit too gently and won't make the slightest bit of sense unless you've seen the 1973 story but I'm a die hard fan and I found this an amusing ten minutes spoof

Oh my... hilarious! [Possible Spoilers]

Warning: Spoilers
Without trying to spoil anything for viewers who have no purchased and borrowed "The Green Death" DVD, this is a hilarious bonus to the wonderful package.

Anyway, as you probably have gathered, this is a "60 Minutes" style investigative report back to Llanfairfach, the setting for one of the latter stories of the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who "The Green Death"

I've never been able to appreciate Gatiss' work until now - this has to be the funniest Dr Who extra + spin off ever. The use of film cameras for the 70s sequence is masterful. Wait until you see what happens to Stevens!

My Rating: 4.5 TARDISes out of a possible 5.
