Christopher Nolan Discusses Bringing 'The Dark Knight' To Life

Jim Gordon gives the bat signal a workout

Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures Finally, after posting six other interview pieces with eight different people we get to the top of the totem pole with co-writer/director/producer and all-out Dark Knight mastermind, Mr. Chris Nolan. Meeting Chris Nolan was something of a treat considering I love Memento, enjoyed The Prestige and am a fan of Batman Begins and loved The Dark Knight. Nolan is a different kind of a film director in more ways than one, but when it comes to comic book adaptations he has changed the game. His vision of Batman Begins inspired to bring together heavy talent for comic book movies instead of cheap B-list actors. His Batman is the reason we have Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man and Ed Norton in The Incredible Hulk. He proved that treating a comic book movie as more than just

Kevin's Review: The Dark Knight - The Dark Has Never Been So Bright

16 July 2008 6:12 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

It feels completely counter-intuitive to care little about the special effects and action in The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's sequel to his 2005 Batman Begins. For a movie like this, you naturally expect to be engrossed by garish gadgetry, incredible stunts and seat-gripping adventure. The Dark Knight has all of this, don't get me wrong, but even the most intricately executed explosion or choreographed car crash does little to shock you out of the stunning, unrelenting dark drama created in what amounts to one of the best sequels in cinematic history. Nolan takes the basic idea of good versus evil to depths rarely seen, and awes the audience with the heady psychology and physics of what happens when "an unstoppable force meets an immovable object." Obviously, The Dark Knight's intensity is enhanced by the incredible performance of the late Heath Ledger. His ability in Brokeback Mountain is something else.

Ledger's Co-Stars Pay Tribute At Dark Knight Premiere

15 July 2008 12:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Christian Bale and Michael Caine paid tribute to their late co-star Heath Ledger at The Dark Knight world premiere in New York on Monday.

Stars including Ethan Hawke, Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and her brother Jake - who appeared with Ledger in 2005 movie Brokeback Mountain - walked the red carpet to see the tragic actor's turn in the film.

And his co-stars were keen to honour his performance as The Joker.

Bale, who plays the caped crusader in the sequel, says, "Working with Heath was fantastic. He steals the movie and I'm quite happy to say that.

"He's a hell of a talent and created a joker that's very iconic and one that will become a classic portrayal of the ages."

And Michael Caine, who plays the hero's butler, was full of praise for the "intensity and ferocity of the performance" given by Ledger.

He adds, "When we were sitting down between takes, he was completely ordinary. He wasn't preparing himself or saying 'Please leave me alone, I've gotta do this.' Instead he was talking to me.

"We would sit and chat and have a cup of coffee, then suddenly they'd say, 'We're ready, Heath,' and he'd go straight into The Joker. His energy was astonishing, especially when it came from this kind of calm. He's certainly the best villain I've ever seen."

Ledger was found dead from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs at his New York apartment on 22 January. He was 28 years old.

The Dark Knight hits movie theatres in the U.S. on 18 July.

Michelle Williams is reportedly set to make a personal film about her late actor boyfriend Heath Ledger.

The actress is said to be keen to keep his memory alive for the sake of their two-year-old daughter Matilda.

A source tells the Australian Daily Telegraph, "It makes Michelle's heart ache that Matilda was so young when Heath died and she's unlikely to retain any memories of her father.

"She (Williams) wants to keep his spirit alive with something Matilda can treasure all her life."

The proposed film will feature friends and colleagues sharing their memories of the Brokeback Mountain star.

Ledger died in January in his New York apartment from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

Echoes of Heath Ledger from the Cast and Crew of 'The Dark Knight'

8 July 2008 3:04 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

During the press junket for The Dark Knight the white elephant in the room was the ghost of Heath Ledger. We had all just seen the film, loved it, and loved what Ledger did in bringing the maniacal character of The Joker to life for the first time since Nicholson did it in 1989's Batman. The difference here, of course, was that there would be no questions for Heath Ledger as he died unexpectedly on January 22, 2008. While this presented an obvious question in how to market the film, which was Joker-centric, the decision appeared to be an easy one for Warner Bros., they continued to embrace the character and the actor that brought him to life. They paid tribute to him on the official Dark Knight site with a memorial page that remains live and I suspect always will. During the junket we asked everyone to talk about working with

Randy Quaid Playing Tim Russert in Biopic

8 July 2008 2:22 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

It took all of 19 days for Hollywood to jump on the idea to realize a film based on the life of the recently deceased "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert was necessary. Defamer found a casting call for the role of Maureen Orth, the wife of Russert, on Craigslist with the following: Small independent New York based film company is searching for the role of Maureen Orth, the wife of the late Tim Russert. The film will explore the last 24 hours of Russert's life and Golden Globe winner Randy Quaid is set to play the role of Tim Russert. Randy Quaid must be hurting for cash if he is willing to jump on this one. I guess dropping his lawsuit against the Brokeback Mountain producers was a bad move on his wallet. However, if you are looking for this film in theaters stop right now, the casting post alone tells us enough,

Bale Angered By Loss Of Ledger Friendship

7 July 2008 12:11 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Christian Bale is angry at the tragic death of actor Heath Ledger - because he's convinced the pair would be firm friends if he was still alive.

Bale, who stars alongside Ledger in new Batman movie The Dark Knight, had developed a bond with the Brokeback Mountain star during filming.

And he's sad he never got the chance to explore their friendship further.

Bale says, "He was a fantastic guy, we had a lot of fun on set. Yes, he immersed himself into the film completely, but, at the same time, he was so easy-going.

"Heath was infectious; his death makes me angry because I know our friendship would have blossomed had he not died."

Bale also referred to reports Ledger had put too much of himself into his role as the Joker.

He adds, "I keep catching myself talking about him in the present tense, which is very upsetting.

"I was obviously with him at that time, but I can only speak for myself. Yes, sometimes I look back and think, 'Ok, maybe I went a little bit too far, committed a little bit too much of myself'. But I don't regret doing it."

Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in New York last January.

Ledger was first choice for Joker role

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has revealed that Heath Ledger was always his first choice for the role of The Joker in the Batman sequel. Nolan denied rumours that Robin Williams and Sean Penn were on the shortlist for the part when casting for the movie was taking place. "Heath was the only one on it. I knew he was it from the start," Christopher told Entertainment Weekly. "The guy had serious nuts. What I needed was someone who wouldn't be afraid of the comparison with Jack Nicholson. And then I saw Heath's incredible performance in Brokeback Mountain. Such a lack of vanity." He (more)

Ledger's Co-stars Predict Oscar Glory

3 July 2008 9:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman have tipped late actor Heath Ledger to win an Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight.

Ledger's Batman co-stars predict he will win over critics with his performance as The Joker at next year's Academy Awards - which will be held just over a year after his tragic death.

Bale, who stars as Batman in the forthcoming movie, says, "A lot of people talk about awards all the time, and it's early days. But if anybody deserves it, of course, it is Heath in this.

"I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award. But you know, to me, you can witness his talent, celebrate his talent within this movie. Anything else is gravy."

He adds, "Heath has done a phenomenal enough job that I would not be surprised (if he won)."

Fellow co-star Gyllenhaal, whose brother Jake starred with Ledger in 2005's Brokeback Mountain, tells MTV.com, "He hit it in the entire performance (in Batman).

"It's so difficult to do that in a huge movie like this and much easier to do in the tiny movies. That's why those are always the people who win Academy Awards.

"Heath was (amazing); it's so unusual, and it happens really rarely even for the best actors, that you just hit this stride in a role and you're totally free. And when that happens, you can do no wrong. It's incredible to be around, and that's what it was like with him."

And Oldman adds, "I think it's an incredible performance. I think it sets a new benchmark. It would surprise me if he didn't get a posthumous Oscar for it."

Only seven actors have received posthumous Oscar nominations, including Spencer Tracy for 1967's Guess Who's Coming To Dinner and James Dean, who was nominated twice after his death for 1955's East Of Eden and 1956's Giant.

Ledger was found dead from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in his New York apartment in January.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will join his sister Maggie at one of The Dark Knight premieres in a bid to pay tribute to his Brokeback Mountain co-star and friend Heath Ledger.

Jake Gyllenhaal, the godfather of Ledger's two-year-old daughter with Michelle Williams, is planning to attend one of the upcoming U.S. premieres.

He'll support his sister Maggie, who worked with tragic Ledger on the new Batman film.

A source tells Ok! magazine, "Jake is debating coming to the New York city premiere or waiting to be Maggie's date at an L.A. (Los Angeles) screening.

"He wants this to be something positive that will celebrate the role of a lifetime and a performance of which Heath was so proud."

Ledger's parents and sister are also expected to jet to New York from their home in Perth, Australia, to attend the New York premiere on 14 July.

Early Reviews Indicate Heath Ledger's Joker is No Laughing Matter

29 June 2008 8:14 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Word is already leaking out about The Dark Knight and so far, everything's favorable. Everyone from Peter Travers to director Kevin Smith are praising the film and Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker, both of them declaring its Oscar-worthiness.

Of course, his performance might be a surprise but it's hardly surprising that Ledger went all out to reshape one of American literature's most enduring villains. Anyone who has seen his work - particularly from Monster's Ball through now - has to be impressed with the depths he would plumb for a role. Ledger was robbed of an Academy Award by voters who preferred a day-at-the-office portrayal by the great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ledger's performance in Brokeback Mountain was, from the first minute he arrives on screen, completely new, daring, and shattering.

And you kind of got the impression in the years since Brokeback that Heath had been crowned one

Film Critic: 'Ledger's Joker Is Oscar Worthy'

26 June 2008 6:36 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

One of America's most revered film critics has started championing Heath Ledger for a posthumous Oscar in his review of the tragic actor's final completed film.

In his critique of The Dark Knight, Rolling Stone's Peter Travers calls Ledger's portrayal of The Joker "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant." He goes on to write, "It's typical of Ledger's total commitment to films as diverse as Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There that he does nothing out of vanity or the need to be liked.

"Ledger's Joker has no gray areas - he's all rampaging id. He creates a Joker for the ages."

Ledger, who died from an accidental drug overdose in January, takes on The Joker role which Jack Nicholson portrayed in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film. The Dark Knight hits cinema screens next month.

And Travers in convinced Ledger is bound for Oscar gold: "If there's a movement to get him the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976's Network, sign me up."
