We're getting to know The Film Experience community one-by-one. Today we're talking to Morgan Borthwick from New Zealand. We've never been but it's on our brains due to Jane Campion's stunning miniseries "Top of the Lake". Here's Morgan.
Hi, Morgan. Do you love Jane Campion? (Please note: There is only one correct answer to this question)
Morgan: Of course! She understands film is as much art as it is storytelling and I could rhapsodise all day about her many gifts. As a director, I love what she does with her actresses, particularly Barbara Hershey who is beyond superlatives in Portrait of a Lady, Abby Cornish in Bright Star and Elizabeth Moss in Top of the Lake, making me forget Peggy of Mad Men ever existed. She should have two best director nominations by now at least, but that's a gripe for another time about the academy and their "we've nominated you once,...

DINARD, France -- In My Father's Den, directed by New Zealander Brad McGann, swept the board at the Dinard Festival of British Film on Saturday, taking the Golden Hitchcock award for best film, the best cinematography prize and the audience award. The movie stars Matthew MacFadyen as a war reporter who returns to his native New Zealand after his father's death and befriends a 16-year-old girl, only to find himself the key suspect when she disappears. The film qualified for inclusion at Dinard because it has a U.K. co-producer, Dixie Linder. A new award for best screenplay among the six movies in competition went to Festival, an ensemble comedy set during the Edinburgh comedy fest written and directed by Annie Griffin. As with McGann's picture, it was her first feature film as director.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Top New Zealand casting director Di Rowan has abruptly closed her business after more than 20 years of casting such films as The Piano, Whale Rider, In My Father's Den and Perfect Creature. "An unpaid debt makes it financially very difficult to continue," Di Rowan said in an interview. "One very bad experience has made it very difficult to run my business the way I have been and to continue doing what I love doing. I don't think it will have any effect on the industry as a whole, I certainly hope not." Rowan discoveries like Anna Paquin, who won an Oscar for The Piano, and Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was Oscar-nominated for Whale Rider, have been pivotal to the New Zealand film industry's unprecedented profile in recent years.

Admissions at this year's Auckland International Film Festival totaled 100,655, organizers said Tuesday. The previous record attendance two years ago was 92,000. "Aucklanders have responded as never before to this year's program," said festival director Bill Gosden. "Our advance bookings were our best ever, and though the day sales declined slightly, the overall result is a very encouraging one." He attributed the success of the program to an unprecedented range of endorsement and media interest, generated by the early securing of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, one of the most heavily patronized offerings, as were Touching The Void and local feature In My Father's Den.
